Why?

I have to believe that St. John's as University makes a lot more money when there basketball team does well and wins. I also have to think Father Harington wants to be respected by our alumni and by the NY media and has to know this once proud basketball program is beyond embarrassing. I know nothing about our AD but I have to believe that being the Athletic Director at St. Johns has to be like a dream job for him. Why don't any of these people do anything to change this? This is not a rant! I reallly want to know why. How is sucking good for the University? Father Harrington may not care about sports but basketball makes money. Money buys computer labs- money buys dorms. The AD might not be a basketball guy but as a sports guy he has to know a Division 1 basketball team has to have a back up point guard. He aslo has to know that after the 2010 season 75% of our basketball team will be leaving the team after graduation. How can a team lose 7/8 players in one year. Forget about sucking now. How can we compete in 3 years? Please tell me why? or How?

Well, we know it isnt going to the players

the money doesnt necessarily go straight to the school, the money goes to the athletic department...the school gives the athletic department a certain amount of money, so really the money we would be making if we had a successful program wouldnt benefit the university as much as you would all think, but it would greatly benefit the athletic department in terms of being able to spend more on upgrading and\or building new facilities

not trying you argue your point because obviously a successful program is much more beneficial than an unsuccessful program, but theres just a misconception really around america that a successful team generates tremendous income for the university..it really only holds true for a handful of big time college football programs

just a side note..dont think im pulling this outta nowhere, i just learned all about this in sports economics this past semester

you learned something in the sports management program? 

theres a website i will try and find. you can look up any school and how much it recieves and how much it spends. because of title 9 they things are made public. i believe all together we bring in about 6 mil due to basketball. as a school we bring in like 20 mil.

Also: a successful revenue-generating team also cuts down on the amount a school has to pour in from other sources.  And allows the school to use the funding streams from those other sources to upgrade facilities.

Great article....very interesting read. With the economy the way it has been the last thing you would think of is donations.

Do you really think the school makes "plenty of money" off the basketball program...?

I am not even sure the basketball program is profitible at this point and I am pretty sure they lose money every single time they step on the court at MSG for a home game.
