CHESTER, Pa. -- A La Salle basketball recruit was arrested on felony drug charges after an undercover drug sting in his hometown near Philadelphia.
According to court documents, 19-year-old freshman Karon Burton was arrested after a foot chase with police Monday in Chester.
On Tuesday, Burton was arraigned on charges of felony drug dealing and resisting arrest, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He was released after posting $25,000 bail.
The 5-foot-9 guard is a former standout at Chester High School. He sat out the Explorers' 2008-2009 season for academic reasons.
According to the Inquirer, court records indicated that Burton also had two previous convictions -- one in 2006, when he was found guilty of disorderly conduct, and in 2007, when he pleaded guilty to disorderly contact.
La Salle coach John Giannini in a statement: "Having found nothing in his past that indicates he had been previously engaged in criminal activity, we find these allegations extremely upsetting. If the criminal charges prove to be true, such behavior violates all criteria for team membership."
Chester police said Burton threw two baggies containing marijuana onto the ground during the sting and had $1,030 cash on him.
Burton does not have a listed home number and it was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
