DJ or Sylven Landesberg?
« on: December 16, 2009, 05:50:30 PM »
My vote is for DJ.  He does so much.  I know Syl can really score--and that would be great--but DJ's passing and driving ability are so key.  I also believe that if the coach just told DJ to play the four and rebound his arse off he could average a double-double.

I believe subtracting DJ from this team and adding Syl would just be devestating to what we do well.  I think we lose to Temple with Syl, because he just isn't strong enough.

Yeah, DJ's beating him in every category so far except PPG and TO's, but they are nearly indentical in both of those categories.

Syl's shooting %'s are low.  I thought he'd be a better outside shooter, but was only 31.4% (1.8 attempts per game) last year and 33.3% (only attempts 1.5 per game?!?!?) this year compared to Kennedy's 40.8% this year and 33.3% last.  At the line, DJ has a slight advantage 80.4% to 76.1% and he also gets there slightly more often.

Even DJ's soph #'s compare favorably to Syl's numbers this year.  DJ averaged more rebounds, assists, steals, and the same 3 pt % (but with twice as many attempts).  Syl obviously scored more 16.9 compared to 13.0 for Dj.

Of course, the key stat is W's and Virginia is effing awful this year.  4-4 and with an easy schedule.  They are a 10-12 win team this year.  Gross. Nice decision, Syl.

I hope he gets a great education in his 2 years there, poor basketball decision

If Syl transfers now, he can be on an NCAA team with DJ and be ready to play this time next year.

If not, his career at UVA is pretty much damned.  I'd love to have him on board.

I voted for DJ.  Only reason is because i know his game a lot better.  Landesberg had a lot of hype coming out, and clearly everyone here would have taken him over DJ at the time.
Its a testament to DJs work ethic and Norm tireless dedication  ::) to make make him the player he is today.
Is Syl a true pg?  looking at his assist numbers i would say no.  If he is, then i may switch my vote.  Man, how great would it be to have a pg over 6 feet tall who could score.

Does he play another sport that I am unaware of?  Because he surely is not getting drafted in basketball.  MAYBE he might be a late second round pick after his senior year.

For this team, if I had to choose, I'd take D.J. because he's a more complete player. Don't get me wrong, Landesberg is great and he is more than just a scorer. But D.J. can drive the lane, shoot, shoot free throws, pass, and sky for the rebound. I think his do-it-all skillset is huge for a team without a go-to outside shooter that can score points in bunches.

Sylven's playing in a system which doesn't exactly benefit him.  Bennett plays a very slow style.

He had a much better frosh year last year than DJ.  I will take Sylven.

DJ is my man.

Sylven made his decision. Hows that working? At least he is getting a good education. I do not see Sylven as a 1st round pick.

I want kids who want to be here at St. John's.

DJ.  He's much more efficieint this year and for those talking about Sylven, he's got game, he's closer to a real point guard and has a better handle.  He's taking up a lot of possessions and not doing them efficiently... and his 3-point shooting remains rough.

He'd have to be more physical to be more than a second rounder in the Association.

I'd rather have DJ - partly because he's here - but Sylven would have played a different role with St. John's, either displacing DJ or more likely, playing at the point (allowing DJ to rebound and make physical slashing plays, and allowing for a shooting 2-guard, either Paris or someone else).  Wasn't that why he went to Virginia in the first place?!

In retrospect, DJ and this team are lucky that Boothe went down last year and DJ was forced to assume PG duties by default.

His game up to that point was all about rebounding, hitting an occasional three, and not really driving to the lane.  It really forced him to change his game and become a more complete player.  I'm not sure if that would have happened naturally.

DJ is the model for why a kid should not go to a crowded top team and look at good programs that offer immediate PT.

If he took the Pitt offer he would d have sat behind Young for his first two years and then split time with Gilbert Brown and the other wings this year.  His senior year would have been his only year to prove himself, and I doubt he would have missed out on three years of big-time PT and the experience, learning, increased decision-making, and everything else that comes with the minutes.

What draft? Not the NBA draft? Surely you can't be serious?
With a lot of practice, maybe he can have a career as impressive at Darryl Hill's.

Right now, he's not as good, and I don't see Hill in the league.

For the most part, guys under 6 feet tall with 1 knee normally don't make it in the League.  I think Syl has a better chance than DH to make it.
