IT'S TIME, as coach Norm Roberts would say, for St. John's to "Ball Up."
The agonizing years of rebuilding is over. St. John's took a 9-1 record into last night's championship game of the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival against Cornell and the program appears to be back on solid ground.
Disappointingly, there was a sparse crowd of just 5,780 at the Garden on Sunday afternoon. The ones that were there stood and applauded the Red Storm's 72-60 victory over Hofstra because it's understood that any game against a local rival holds some risk for St. John's, the only Big East program in the five boroughs.
"The bottom line, which everybody would tell you [is], we're in a no-win situation when we play this game - zero, zero," said Roberts. "If we win, everybody thinks in their mind that we should've won, and that's not true."
