Marcus was a great all around player, except for shooting.  Sure he cheated on defense a lot but he was still a better defender than Hazell.  That Hazell is some magical shooter (and the fact that he'll even get a sniff from the NBA) is a bit of a myth.  He's never shot over 36% from 3 in any season.  Yes he has games where either through a good streak, or through a huge number of shots, he goes off in total points but he's not a great defender, not a good passer/distributor, not especially quick, has an awful A/T ratio.

They both play/played a ton of minutes and took a huge number of shots (though in my mind Marcus was more justified being that he was never a frosh/soph and never had teammates as good as Hazell's nor a PG on his team) and Hazell has a better 3PG shooting percentage but in every other category, statistical and otherwise, Hatten is/was Hazell's superior.  If Hatten had Hazell's height he would have been legendary.  Hazell's a very good college scorer and I wouldn't mind having him on STJ's right now but he's overrated in general especially by many of us here.  He's a longshot to get drafted and an even longer shot to ever make a roster.  Plus he has big ears.  ; )

In college I do not pay attention to shooting % as a lot of teams cater their offense around one player shooting a lot of shots. Hatten was Iverson lite and was vey enjoyable to watch. In fact Hatten probably makes my all time top 10 which considering I go back to the Mullin years or as DR Fun/GFAK or whatever he goes by here likes to call the "Glory Years" ;) By praising Hazzell, I was not digging at Hatten, just pointing out that sometimes a team best player shoots a lot and contested which affects their percentage.
Low percentage or not Hazzell does have a nice jumper, plus he appears to be a legit 6-5 or whatever. I think Hazzell gets drafted!

BTW that Pope kid should take Free Throw lessons from Sean Evans!

Hazell has some things Marcus never did:  a true NBA position, an NBA outside shot, and good size.

Hazell is a horrible defender.  He doesn't put forth the effort, and it's a shame because that is the one thing that will keep him out of the NBA.  He had enough offense from day one of last season if he was a great defender.

Hatten was even a better rebounder than Hazell.

I'm not going to knocks Hazell's %'s this game (although 22% from three is weak) b/c shot 42% from two with that many shots is impressive.

This game?  NBA outside shot? Hazell doesn't have an above average college outside shot.  He's shooting 29% from three for the season.  Take away the 6-11 he went against a VMI team that was encouraging him to shoot so they could run (I mean 134 points?  C'mon) and it's 27%.  If anyone on SJ's was shooting 27% from 3 after 11 games and still putting up 33 shots per game people would flip, not declare them NBA ready.  But yes he did shoot 36% from 3 last year.   Is that impressive?

He's a very good college player who has a scoring mentality/lack of conscience and yes, unlike Marcus, he's big enough to play the two at a (not necessarily the) next level but he's got a very long way to go before he's even an unsigned FA in an NBA camp.

How old will Hazzell be when he enters the draft? If he stays in college I think that would make him 24 or 25, he'll have a small window and maybe some NBA teams would rather take a chance on the younger kid

WOW. ..  i have seen tons of threads go off in CRAZY directions but a Merry Christmas thread evolved into a Jeremey Hazel thread. I think this is quite an accomplishment.

HA HA HA...  can't wait to see what happens to Happy New Year thread.

I hope everyone enjoyed a very Merry Christmas..!!
