St. John's has bigger concerns than the trash-talking of a former New York high school star who has been pampered for most of his athletic career.
Maybe Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin will make Lance Stephenson a better player than St. John's coach Norm Roberts would have, as Stephenson has stated, but since he will only be coached by Cronin, we'll never know.
Roberts is too smart and classy to get pulled into a war of words with a prima donna such as Stephenson, the former Lincoln High star.
"I don't take offense to that," Roberts said.
What Roberts takes offense to is his team's 0-3 start in Big East play. The Red Storm (10-5, 0-3) hosts Cincinnati (11-5, 2-2) at the Garden tonight and an 0-4 conference start could be the knockout punch for a team that admits to being on the ropes.
"Oh, it's very important," forward Justin Burrell said. "I want to say it's more important for ourselves. You don't want to lose hope. You don't want to not believe in yourself.
