This was more than a win. This was more than a statement. This was, potentially, a watershed moment in the St. John's basketball program under Norm Roberts.
The Red Storm was 14 seconds away from falling to 0-4 in Big East play in what was supposed to be a breakout season. And the loss would have come at the hands of Cincinnati, the program former Lincoln star Lance Stephenson chose over St. John's.
But Roberts recently has begun landing some quality New York players, and last night Dwight Hardy of The Bronx made the big plays, the winning plays, that Brooklyn's Stephenson could not.
Hardy, as cool as Hugh Hefner around playmates, drained four free throws in the final 14 seconds to give the Red Storm a 52-50 win in the Garden. He also made two crucial steals and finished with a game-high 19, tying his career high.
