Another ranked opponent. Another lead to protect. Another late collapse to explain.
St. John's has had more big ones get away than grandpa did at the ol' fishing hole.
The Red Storm had a shot at the biggest road victory in coach Norm Roberts' six seasons Thursday night against a faltering Pittsburgh team that had fallen from the Top 10 to No. 17. The Johnnies led at the half. They led by four with less than 15 minutes to go. But in the end the Panthers were the ones who emerged with a 63-53 Big East victory before 12,511 at Petersen Events Center.
All of the Johnnies were upset, but none more than D.J. Kennedy. The 6-5 junior grew up "a hundred yards from the Pete" and was recruited by Pitt. In the end he chose St. John's because he felt it best to go to school in another city, but playing here is a big deal to him. He had 54 family and friends in attendance, but played poorly.
"Why am I upset? Why wouldn't I be upset?" said Kennedy, who had nine points on 3-for-11 shooting. "I'm at home. I lost the game. I feel like I didn't play too well.
"There's a lot (of reasons) why I'm upset. I'm tired of losing. I feel like - I don't know - like a lot went on tonight."
