Buzz Williams certainly had a major retooling job this year, bringing back one real good player in Heywood, some role players and some nice new folks.

Despite that challenge and losing a regarded recruit, Buzz has done an outstanding job pulling things together. Although his team lost a number of close games early, they always competed and have a shot at the NCAAs.

Williams is reputed to be a highly organized coach, who studies film well, adjusts game plans accordingly and is know as a solid strategist. A Tom Crean apostle who also has put together a solid staff and utilizes their input well, according to Crean himself.

All in all, kudos to Buzz for putting a team on the floor that competes and is fun to watch. I leave comparison to Norm to you.

There is no comparison. A good coach doesn't need a roster of All Americans, or even upperclassmen like we have, to win.

In 99, we were going to the Elite 8 and MU couldn't fill up half of the Bradley Center to lose to Southern Miss. The student support was just as bad, if not worse, than it is now at SJU. Mike Deane turned into Tom Crean & somehow players like Jared Lovette & Aaron Hutchins turned into Travis Diener & Dwyane Wade.

They turned it around fairly quickly w/ an unknown assistant. Unfortunately, we haven't. We haven't beaten them since they joined the BE either. Haven't even given them a competitive game.

My wife, a Marquette grad, and all of her friends razz me via email & text for 5 years and counting everytime we lose to them. None worse than the shellacking we got in the BET last March.

This year is the best chance we have to take them and even that is probably doubtful. Gonna be more fun times at my house Wednesday night...

i thought we gave them a pretty competetive game in the BET back in 07, especially considering we played without Lamont. we let Fitzgerald beat us, i think he went off for like 20. but your right, they have owned us since coming to the BE. and it really shows what a good coach can do. Marquette returned one proven player in Lazar and was picked to finish 12th in the conference. buzz williams prepares his team as well as any coach in the conference. and i loved his breakdown of st johns after they smacked us in the BET last year, holding us to 10 points in the 1st half.

"I think that the thing that was best for us, and we spent a lot of time on it, St. John's set 88 ball screens on us at Marquette when we played and yesterday against Georgetown they set 55 ball screens and so it was paramount for us to have a chance to win from a team defensive standpoint that we would have to guard their ball screens and then once the shot goes up, they were leading in conference play, they were averaging 37 rebounds a game. We had to block out and make sure we secured the defensive rebound in order to finish the possession.  We were able to do that at a very efficient and high rate particularly in the first half, as they shot 13 percent"

..thats what a good coach does. prepares his team to take away the other teams strengths. meanwhile, we just figured out how to run a good practice in year 6.....
