ESPN

June, 2009: Angel is an extremely intriguing prospect. He is very long and very skilled. He can handle the ball and shoot with range to 22 feet. A legit 6-feet-7 with condor like arms he is a tough player to guard. Post players can not stay with his quickness and he is too big and long for smaller perimeter players. He has a very nice offensive package but could improve the other aspects of his game. He is a decent rebounder but with his size, length and athletic ability he should be better. Defensively he needs to improve his effort. He can also be an effective shotblocker when motivated. Angel is a little underrated right now in his class but he has the potential to be an elite, top level player.

April, 2009: Angel is a long and quick athlete with major level length and skill. Offensively he has very good ball handling skills and if he can improve his perimeter shooting he may be able to make the transition from the 4 spot to a combo forward position. He is effective in many ways because he plays with a high basketball IQ, makes good decisions and is extremely active on the floor. His passing ability is a big asset to his game as he does a good job finding cutters and open shooters. In transition he does a good job sprinting the floor, finishing as well as creating scoring opportunities in the open floor. Defensively he does a solid job moving his feet and allowing his athleticism to compliment his game. Improved body strength and conditioning will help expand his game.

Indiana and St. John’s became the latest high-major schools to offer 6-8, 184-pound junior forward Angel Nunez of Harlem.

Nunez now holds offers from those two schools, as well as UConn, Louisville, Arizona, Rutgers and Arkansas.

Nunez and his mentor, Eric Martinez, visited St. John’s Tuesday and said they had a great time.

“I didn’t think St. John’s would look like that,” said Nunez, who is home for a few weeks before returning to the Winchendon (Mass.) School.

“I had never been there before. It was kind of nice. I like St. John’s.”

Indiana also offered Nunez through assistant Roshown McLeod, the former St. Anthony standout.

“They said that they obviously have Kyrie [Irving] and [Michael] Gilchrist on the top of their list, but Angel is the next tier kid that they’re trying to recruit,” Martinez said.

One assistant coach spoke very highly of Nunez’s potential.

“He’s a pro,” the coach said. “He just needs to go to the right school that’s gonna develop his talent and bring out that fire that he has.”

Nunez will attend either the Syracuse or Indiana elite camp at the end of the month, but Martinez said it would probably be Syracuse because of the proximity.

“We’ll probably go to Syracuse because it’s closer,” Martinez said.

He's 2011 but he'd need to be 2 years removed from the Gauchos under Hicks.

Does he always play with the Gauchos? I thought he was playing with some other AAU squads as well.  The AAU issue we can get around a bit because kids change AAU teams like people change socks.  The Rice thing is a total no go but it is what it is.

Yeah I wasn't sure how it worked with the AAU thing.  Didn't Omari play a little with the Gauchos even?  Just like how Lance played the tourny with the Panthers at the end of last year.

After a rough month playing out of position and switching AAU teams, Angel Nunez looked to find his comfort zone. He led Team Tri-State to a 1-1 mark, including a 23-point performance in a victory over the Juice All-Stars. The 6-foot-8 wing started July with the powerhouse New York Gauchos, but switched to the Juice All-Stars for the AAU Super Showcase after he was playing out of position in the paint. He showed his entire repertoire at Fordham: knocking down long jumpers, finishing in the paint, blocking shots on the defensive end and setting up his teammates for easy shots.

“You could see today he’s definitely one of the best players in the country,” said Eric Martinez, Nunez’s mentor.

Nunez, who attended Winchendon Prep (Mass.) last year and will be at Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) this fall, plans to cut his list to five sometime in August and make a decision shortly thereafter. He has received scholarship offers from Arizona, Connecticut, Louisville and St. John’s.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

NTSG, is that common - a head coach sniping at a specific recruiting site publicly (on Twitter, in the papers, etc)...?

And for all - any strong opinions on Nunez game?  The guy seemed to fall of the face of the recruiting earth, almost.

There's a lot of joking and friendliness between the two factions, coaches and analysts. It's sort of a friendly, but symbiotic relationship.

Greenberg was just teasing. It's sort of a running joke how little Goodman actually sees these kids. He skulks around the gyms in July--not April, May, or June (no coaches)-- to try to get and spread gossip with coaches. The coaches are obviously there to evaluate players and to be seen by the ones they like in the limited time the NCAA currently permits, particularly after wiping out the April evaluation period. Goodman, however, tries to use that time to schmooze with the coaches, both assistants and head ones (Donovan, Pastner). Visually, the coaches are almost always looking in the direction of the players, while Goodman is perpendicular--trying to get eye contact with the respective coaches. DeCourcy (particularly) and Parrish, who are based out of Cincy and Memphis/No. Miss respectively, are slightly more interested in actually observing the players they'll be covering and establishing relationships early.

Mr. Konchalski thinks he'll be one of those kids that people will spend four years talking about their substantial potential. He's not sure that he has that killer instinct. Pitino might be able to reach and unlock him. He's onto his third school now (second with Khem).

It'll be interesting to see who winds up with Mississippi's Rodney Hood, who used to run with LaQuinton Ross and Deville Smith for MBA Hoops. Hood, who is about as volatile as any prospect in the class, is looking at three of our BE brethren, including Louisville.
