Lavin Stay true to New York City program's roots [NY Daily News]

The late, great Al McGuire, who played for St. John's before going on to a Hall of Fame coaching career at Marquette and was a colorful analyst for NBC, used to always say winning was synonymous with "going uptown."

It may even mean splurging for car service instead of an express train.

For the last few years, St. John's has been taking the local. But times are changing.

I'm normally a major critic of Hoops Weiss, but he really nailed it with a few of these:

"When St. John's is relevant on the national stage, it reinforces the fact that coaching is not about resources, it's about people."

BINGO.  A good coach and recruiter can overcome facilities, budget restraints, etc. and still WIN. 

"Unlike recent St. John's coaches, who complained about the lack of support from local AAU programs or all the bells and whistles everyone else had and were constantly looking for that next job, Lavin and his staff have shown that, as much as resources help and aid in the process, they are not the roadblocks that prevent you from winning if you make the players you inherited better."

A shot at the last regime for their excuse making and a shot at Fraschilla for "looking for that next job"??  Anyways, statement is absolutely correct in terms of resources once again.
