St. John’s is riding a three-game winning streak and Red Storm fans are giddy about the program’s first potential NCAA tournament appearance since 2002.

But here comes first-place Pittsburgh and the likely return of leading scorer Ashton Gibbs. The teams will square off at high noon on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

ESPN analyst and former St. John's coach Fran Fraschilla talked with The Post's Justin Terranova about the Red Storm's tourney chances, why he respects Steve Lavin, and his experience interviewing for openings this offseason. St. John's faces Pittsburgh on Saturday (Noon, ESPN) looking to add another big win to their tournament resume.

Q: You recruited a St. John's team that enjoyed great success after you left. Can you relate to what Norm Roberts must be feeling?

A: The thing I respect most about Steve Lavin is he's the kind of guy that acknowledges Norm's contribution to where St. John's is right now. Even though Steve and his staff have done a great coaching job he's man enough to admit what a good team he got. It's kind of ironic because I've joked that I left a similar situation behind in 1999 and the guy who replaced me (Mike Jarvis) thought he invented basketball.

For Ashton Gibbs, the toughest part about being on the bench wasn't the pain, the rehabilitation or the uncertainty after missing three games with a left knee injury. It was watching his teammates march on without him.

Gibbs does not have to worry about that any longer. He will be a part of Pitt's march to March Madness.

Ashton Gibbs will be wearing his favorite two-piece suit this weekend in New York.

It’s blue and gold with a large No. 12 on the back.

The junior guard, who missed the past three games with a partially torn left medial collateral ligament in his left knee, will return to the court when No. 4 Pitt (24-2, 12-1 Big East) travels to play surging St. John’s (16-9, 8-5) on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

“I was probably the happiest man in the world when they gave me the OK to play,” said Gibbs, Pitt's leading scorer at 16.3 points per game. “I’m feeling good.”

No. 4 ranked and first place Pitt (24-2, 12-1 Big East) travels to New York City and Madison Square Garden to play St. John's (16-9, 8-5 Big East) for a Saturday, February 19 contest at the Petersen Events Center. Tipoff is slated for Noon ET.

Here are three things to watch in Saturday afternoon's game between St. John's (16-9, 8-5 in Big East) and No. 4 Pittsburgh (24-2, 12-1) at Madison Square Garden.

Tip-off is at noon ET, and the game will air on ESPN. The game will also be available on ESPN3.com.

"We're well aware that for over a decade now, [Pittsburgh's] been the dominant team in the Big East," St. John's coach Steve Lavin said on a conference call Thursday. "And this year in particular, [they've been] as impressive as any team in the country at methodically dismantling oppoenents with their defense, their physicality.

The St. John's basketball team, a.k.a. the Payback Boys, has a grease board in their locker room with the name of an opponent alongside a box containing a checkmark.

"There were a lot of teams coming to this year we never beat since we've been here and every time we get that win, we check them off," said senior forward Sean Evans.

West Virginia? Check. Duke? Check. Marquette? Check.

Will Pittsburgh be the next?

The answer comes today when the Red Storm (16-9 overall, 8-5 Big East) face the Panthers (24-2, 12-1), another squad these seniors have never beaten.

D.J. Kennedy did everything but drive the St. John's team bus last season. He led the Red Storm in nearly every statistical category, including scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and 3-point shooting percentage. It was one of the most impressive individual performances of the college basketball season.

The only drawback was the team underperformed. The Red Storm finished the season 6-12 in Big East Conference play, finishing 13th while marking the seventh consecutive season with an 11th place or lower finish.

When D.J. Kennedy left the Hill District for St. John's four years ago, he envisioned playing for a winning basketball program in New York City.

So did his upbeat, talented then-freshmen teammates. But St. John's was so bad that first season, it didn't even qualify for the tournament — the Big East Tournament.

Three years later, Kennedy and his fellow seniors are close to fulfilling their goal, moving to the brink of an invite to March Madness and putting some additional bounce into the basketball-crazy Big Apple.

"We came here together," Kennedy said, "and we all know what it means to each one of us."
