do the official rankings follow the AP or Coaches Poll I'm always confused by this. Coaches Poll has us at #25 but if AP is higher do we go by that?

TV games use the ESPN/USA Today coaches ranking for obvious reasons

Forde's Top 5 Teams - ESPN Video - ESPN

St. John's, a former Big East and national power, had fallen on tough times in recent seasons, failing to reach the NCAA tournament since 2002. This year, the Red Storm (17-9, 9-5 Big East) have made a habit out of knocking off highly ranked teams, with wins over Duke, Notre Dame, No. 15 Connecticut and No. 11 Georgetown in addition to last week's upset of Pitt.

Looking at the rankings for a second....

How in the world do 3 coaches (really coaches assistants because they vote not the coach) in the country actually think that SAN DIEGO STATE is the best team in the nation?!?!

They have beaten St Mary's at home and a weak Gonzaga team and lost to BYU...

Put them in a BCS conference and they'd have at least 6 losses.

It is great to be ranked but I have always put more credence in the AP poll.

here's how they voted...quite a few, 18 in total, had us unranked.  Goodman and Carino have us at 13

I know that several posters thought that we should be ranked higher but I want to congratulate the team to get it.

#23 in the AP

Happy for the lads; they have worked hard for it and Lavin will keep them focused now that the target is on their backs.  I think breaking through to the top 25 was a great achievement this week as, I believe, that 19 through 25 from last week all won their 2 games last week.  writers awarded this for our achievements NOT someone else's losses.

Ken Pomeroy chimes in...

"Lavin inherited a team of seniors that was unlucky last year. BP projection had them 45th. They are 35th. It pays to have friends at ESPN."

His rankings have Belmont at 29. Enough said.

Congrats to the Seniors- it has been a long climb.

We have 2 more losses than any other team in the 2 top 25's.
We ARE getting credit for our brutal schedule.

We do have much stronger wins than the teams immediately
above us, but we have those 2 ugly losses.
If we had just not lost to Fordham- we could then expect 15-20

The computer rankings I think have us anywhere from 15-35.

"I think it's a benchmark of achievement for the senior class and naturally it will be helpful in recruiting with the national exposure," said first-year head coach Steve Lavin. "It is empirical evidence that their hard work is paying off. You try not to have emotional peaks and valleys and you are always concerned and mindful of complacency. But with this group, they have an outstanding work ethic, focus and resolve to finish their careers on a high note." The Red Storm's now No. 1-rated strength of schedule is another sign of what this team has been able to achieve with five wins over ranked opponents, four in the BIG EAST and another over Duke. Only No. 5/5 Texas has defeated more Top 25 teams (6) than the five topped by BIG EAST squads No. 23/25 St. John's, No. 4/6 Pitt, No. 9/9 Notre Dame, No. 11/11 Georgetown, No. 14/15 Connecticut, No. 15/14 Villanova and No. 16/16 Louisville. The BIG EAST occupies eight of the 25 spots in both polls this week.

Red Storm coach Steve Lavin knows what it's like to be a mainstay in the AP Top 25 men's basketball rankings. The same can't be said for the players on his roster at St. John's, but they hope that Monday is the beginning of what will become a weekly ritual.

After a drought of nearly 11 years, St. John's finds itself back in the Top 25 Monday, coming in at No. 23 in the rankings.

"It's great to see a number by our name. We know we are the first St. John's team since 2000 to be ranked in the Top 25," senior point guard and Queens native, Malik Boothe said in a release issued by the school. "Being from here, myself and my teammates are proud of the resurgence of college basketball in New York, and getting the city back excited - the Garden is electric every night. But we're not going to get complacent now. We just have to keep it going, and keep getting better."

The good news keeps on coming for St. John’s and senior guard Dwight Hardy.

After edging No. 4 Pittsburgh, 60-59, Saturday at Madison Square Garden on Hardy’s last-second underhand lay-up, the Johnnies on Monday entered The AP Top 25 at No. 23 — their first national ranking since November 2000.
