It hasn’t been easy for St. John’s at their on-campus venue of Carnesecca Arena in recent times. Despite their .840 winning percentage on the corner of Union and Utopia, there have been many games that got away from the Johnnies in recent years.  Mercifully, tonight was not one of them.

Playing the 500th game in Carnesecca’s illustrious history, and the first as a ranked team since November of 2000 amid being overshadowed in the local media due to the Knicks’ acquisition of Carmelo Anthony, the No. 23 Red Storm (18-9, 10-5 in the Big East) picked up right where they left off against fourth-ranked Pittsburgh last Saturday with a 76-51 victory over DePaul (7-20, 1-14). The win assured St. John’s of finishing above .500 in the Big East for the first time since the 2001-02 season, which is coincidentally the last year in which the Red Storm advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

St. John's took its newly minted national ranking out for a first spin Wednesday night. The Red Storm clearly likes the acceleration and the way it handles.

The Johnnies did nothing to endanger their fresh No. 23 ranking against lowly DePaul, rolling to a 76-51 victory before a sellout crowd of 5,602 at Carnesecca Arena.

NEW YORK -- In its first test since a bullseye was planted squarely on its chest, St. John's passed with flying colors.

The Red Storm, playing a game as a ranked team for the first time in 11 years, pummeled last-place DePaul on Wednesday night, 76-51.

"We knew how important this game was," said St. John's forward D.J. Kennedy, who finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. "In past years, we had letdowns in games like this. So we just locked in on everything."

When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

Dwight Hardy says he has never looked at a list of Big East Player of the Year winners; couldn't even name one person on the list. But sitting in the stands last night in the building that bears his name Lou Carnesecca was watching the Hardy kid drive through or shoot over DePaul.

"He reminds me of Boo Harvey or Marcus Hatten," Carnesecca told The Post. "He really shows no fear. He takes good shots. And he always seems to be in control."
