Carmine, how is that not true?

94-95-James Scott
95-96-Zendon Hamilton
96-97-Zendon Hamilton
97-98-Ron Artest

Hamilton was not better than Lopez both of those years.  You can't point to Zendon's numbers as proof he was better and in the same breath say Lopez being 3rd on the alltime scoring list means zero.  Doesn't work like that.

Zendon was great, i thought in his sophomore year.  Lopez was still all round better.  Lopez was a better passer than he got credited with.

Zendon's soph year he was the only player on the team doing anything. He was one of the best rebounders in the country. A lot of his points came from fighting for position under the basket and putting it in.

Lopez is 3rd all time in scoring here, and that alone is very misleading.

A lot of his rebounds came from his own misses.  ;)    Zendon had a great soph year. No argument from me.  He was a legit 20 and 10 most nights.

Lopez might have had a different experience here had he been treated like a regular freshman.

Lopez was the best player his senior year and his frosh yr.   Artest was great...for q frosh.  Your memories of him as a soph are clouding your analysis.

Now as I recall he has or had a brother Anderson Lopez, who I wondered could have been the cause of dissension on the team.  McLeod transfer and the inability to bring in a point guard, as on occasion he appear to be instructing Mahoney how to run the team.

As a freshman, he never should have been starting. The only freshman who should have started was Z because there really was no one else. Lopez wasn't ready for the BE. James Scott, despite having his own issues was a senior, and should have been out there. The message that Mahoney sent to all of the upperclassman was awful.

He started 3 clueless freshman, and it cost them the season. Brown, Scott, McCloud, Minlend and Z should have started. McCloud was a better shooter than Lopez. Sadly, it didn't matter because Lopez was the name.

As far as his senior year, I concede. He finally put it together. His stats
were better than Artest's, but we watched that team, Lopez had a tremendous amount of help. How many NBA players were on that team? 6? 7? But who took the final shot against Detroit? Not the guy who should have. Obviously.

Look, if you want to believe that Felipe was never the best player on any SJU team than that is your perogative.  However,  the BE coaches that coached against him and I feel differently as evidenced by the 1st team all-conference honors they bestowed upon him.

Poison, thanks for conceding senior year.  Now let's talk frosh year.  Let's put aside the argument of who was the best player.

How can you suggest mahoney should have benched felipe?  You can't. Sign the number one kid in the country and NOT start him, especially if you went 12-17 the year before!  Felipe had an amazing frosh year. 17 ppg, bunch of boards. Was he a savior? No. But that is a great frosh year, similar to or better than harrison barnes for much of this year. Felipe deserved to start...scott did too. Mahoney shoulda found a way to start both, but felipe HAD to start for many reasons. This wasn't a duke or carolina team coming off a final four run. You sign mcd aas, and u aren't a title contender returning everyone, they have to start. #1 overall prob aLWAYS starts.

I always thought James Scott resented Lopez because of the treatment he received and feeling he was the better player (than Lopez).   I agree that Lopez became a better player his senior year.  Honestly, that was the only season (other than the first half of freshmen season) in which I truly appreciated Lopez.

By the way, Lopez and the others (Zendon and Turner) were the seniors, but Artest was definitely the leader on the '97-'98 team.

Kid, the phrase "We are... St.John's" is and always will be bigger than Lopez. That is why he should have come off the bench. Sure, he was widely considered the best freshman in the country, but as it turned out, he wasn't even the best freshman in his conference.

Giving him special treatment ruined the team that year. Is putting up 17 a game really so special if in all of the games where you scored a lot of points, the team lost?

Then, according to your theory Polee should not start.

Polee is smarter than Lopez was. Much smarter.

Your disdain for Felipe is misguided but was not unusual thought from the fanbase during his playing days and immediately following.  The SI cover and hype was more than ever seen in Queen's before or since and would have been difficult to live up to from the get go.

Any comparisions between Pole vault, particularly one in Polee's favor, and Lopez is just silly at this point in the freshmen's career.

The facts don't lie:

3rd all-time SJU scorer
1st team all BE
best player on the team in at least one ( your change of heart ), if not multiple seasons
Nba career

Felipe could play.
