UMBC - Postgame Links

AP story

Nurideen Lindsey came so close to basketball's statistical standard for a great game. What mattered most was that he and his teammates didn't need to rally for another win.

Lindsey missed a triple-double by one assist and St. John's pulled away to an 82-59 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday.
The Red Storm's first two wins this season featured second-half comebacks and everybody connected with the young team was hoping for a different script to Sunday's game and they got it.

THE SKINNY: St. John's led at halftime for the first time this season, 39-34, after trailing by as many as seven in the early going. D'Angelo Harrison scored 12 first-half points, and Nurideen Lindsey added 10 points and seven assists. The Red Storm committed nine-first half turnovers, but forced 10 by the Retrievers.

This time there was no early hole to climb out of. This time there was no need for a furious comeback.

St. John’s played its best first half of the season thus far, enjoyed its first halftime lead of the young season and rolled past Maryland-Baltimore County for an easy 82-59 win Sunday before 4,424 at Carnesecca Arena.

The Red Storm (3-0), in their final tune-up before facing a nationally-ranked challenger, grabbed control late in the first half with a 17-9 run that included eight points by Nurideen Lindsey and seven by D’Angelo Harrison. It put the Storm up 35-28 and the Johnnies never saw the lead shrink below five after that.

After two games that needed second-half comebacks to pull out a victory, St. John’s fans were eager to see their team execute for a full 40 minutes. Even though the Red Storm trailed by seven points early in the first half, it was as far behind as they would fall for the remainder of the afternoon.

After the St. John’s men’s soccer team won this year’s Big East championship, giving fans at Carnesecca Arena reason enough to cheer, five players scored in double figures for Steve Lavin’s squad as the Red Storm rolled to a convincing 82-59 victory over UMBC.

Storm Surge

You wouldn’t have noticed if you weren’t paying attention.

On Friday afternoon, junior guard Malik Stith sat behind the table in St. John’s media room, a table with a red, floor-length banner that obscured the lower half of his seated body, and took questions, preceding St. John’s Sunday matchup with UMBC.

When the questioning had ended, Stith said, “Thank you,” got up, and left, heading out to, presumably, the St. John’s training room.

As he walked out the door, it became apparent: that man isn’t wearing any socks or shoes. At that point, it was really just an anecdotal detail.

When Stith eventually slid on some socks and tied his white and red Nikes for Sunday’s game versus UMBC, he put on one of the most impressive performances of his college career, turning his barefoot pregame interview into something more.

Player of the Week: Nurideen Lindsey, St. John's

St. John's may not have played a murder's row schedule in the first week of the season, but the youthful Johnnies were tested. They dug themselves a big hole against William & Mary and a bigger hole against Lehigh before coming back and winning both of those games. Lindsey played a huge role in both of those comebacks, getting 15 of his 19 points in the second half against W&M and finishing with 15 points against Lehigh. Lindsey's best game of the week came against UMBC. He finished one assist shy of a triple-double with 15 points, 10 boards and nine assists.

For the week, Lindsey finished with averages of 16.3 ppg, 4.7 apg and 4.7 rpg. He also added 3.3 spg while shooting a crisp 50% from the field. Lindsey is a slippery penetrator. He's got a crafty handle and while he doesn't have blazing speed, he's quick and understands how to change speeds. He's a good finisher when he gets into the paint and, at least against some mid-major competition, was able to avoid getting his shot blocked while drawing fouls. He still has plenty of room to improve -- Lindsey turned the ball over 10 times in the three games while shooting 0-7 from three and just 15-27 (55.6%) from the line -- but what makes him so important to the Steve Lavin's team is he is one of the only guys that is capable of getting his own shot.

Before either of New York’s football teams took the field on Sunday, St. John’s put another checkmark in the win column.

The Red Storm, hosting the Retrievers of Maryland-Baltimore County, improved to 3-0 on the young season after a rather comfortable 82-59 victory.

“There was kind of a methodical, deliberate, mature way that we separated ourselves from UMBC,” said St. John’s coach Steve Lavin. “That’s a hard thing to define, but today I sensed a maturity and poise, the temperament or bearing that you like to see in a team.”
