The Holiday Festival was a staple of the holiday season in this city for years. It was the best Christmas college basketball tournament in the country, sandwiched between the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and the Times Square ball drop — and it gave fans a chance to watch some of the best teams in the country in non-league competition.

And to Lavin’s credit, he didn’t jettison Lindsey at the first sign of discord. The day after announcing Lindsey was leaving the program, Lavin engaged in a lengthy series of texts messages with his former player, encouraging and consoling a young man who once again was in that all-too-familiar position of not knowing what the future holds.

“If there’s anybody that should take any blame for Nuri leaving it should be me,’’ said assistant coach Mike Dunlap, who has taken over the first chair. “Because I coach a certain way, demand a certain thing, and had I had more time to develop a relationship with Nuri, I think he wouldn’t have left.’’

This is only going to get better.

St. John’s avenged a stunning loss at Fordham last year with a 56-50 triumph yesterday in the MSG Holiday Festival at the Garden. It wasn’t as thrilling as last year’s battle between the borough rivals, but it had its moments.

The Red Storm (5-5) opened a 42-26 second half lead and seemed to be on the way to a blowout when it was almost déjà vu all over again. Last year the Red Storm led the Rams by 21 before falling apart like Legos in an 84-81 loss.

Sure enough, with 11 points and 14 rebounds from Chris Gaston and a game-high 17 from Branden Frazier of Brooklyn, the Rams sliced their deficit to 53-50 with just under two minutes remaining.

NEW YORK -- Moe Harkless had just played the entire 40 minutes in only his 10th college game, scoring 13 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in a 56-50 St. John's victory over Fordham, yet the freshman forward said he didn't feel tired.

"Once you get that second wind," Harkless said, "it's like I could probably keep playing, play another 40 minutes."

It's a good thing St. John's did not need to play any more minutes, however, since four of its five starters went the distance Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. That's what happens when you have only six scholarship players on your roster and one of them -- junior guard Malik Stith -- is suspended for a half for a minor academic violation. St. John's did not make a single substitution in the first 20 minutes.

It’s been said that revenge is a dish best served cold. Yesterday at Madison Square Garden, not only was it cold, it was also not easy on the eyes by any means.

Taking on Fordham University for the first time since last year’s upset loss at Rose Hill Gym, St. John’s (5-5) overcame a six-man rotation to defeat the Rams (4-6) by the final of 56-50 in their Holiday Festival matchup, ending a three-game losing streak. Three Red Storm players scored ten or more points, led by D’Angelo Harrison (15 points, six rebounds) and Moe Harkless. (13 points and 16 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double)
