What it means: As the temperature drops, this young St. John's team is heating up, and climbing the Big East ladder.

The Red Storm won their third game in a row Wednesday, improving to 12-7 overall and 4-3 in Big East play. St. John's is now in a tie for fourth-place in the conference with Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, a half-game behind third-place Louisville.

The Big East rivalries betweeen St. John's, Rutgers and Seton Hall have always been between a competition within a competition, and the closest thing the Metropolitan area has to the Big 5 city series' battles between Villanova, La Salle, St. Joseph's, Temple and Penn in Philadelphia.
When the Red Storm defeated Rutgers, 72-60, before a disappointing half -empty RAC Wednesday night in Piscataway, it was also a barometer of how far this young team (12-7, 4-3) has come since the 11 a.m. Saturday morning debacle against Georgetown Jan. 12 in the Garden.

AP Story

JaKarr Sampson and D'Angelo Harrison backed their words and got a lot of help from Sir'Dominic Pointer.

Pointer's 13 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and six steals helped St. John's to its third straight win, a 72-60 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday night.

It avenged a two-point home loss the Red Storm (12-7, 4-3 Big East) suffered to Rutgers (12-6, 3-4) on Jan. 9. Earlier this week Sampson and Harrison told New York reporters that St. John's was the better team and should have won that game.

Sampson, a freshman forward, had 21 points and seven rebounds, while Harrison, a sophomore guard, scored 20 points.

Mike Rice thought his Rutgers men’s basketball team would play with an edge coming off Saturday’s controversial loss at Notre Dame.

Turns out St. John’s brought the mean streak to Wednesday’s showdown at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

"Sir'Dominic Pointer's line is one of the more exceptional of any kid I've coached,'' Steve Lavin said. "He's the Tasmanian devil, the energizer for our team. He's been the difference the last couple of weeks."
