Team 3PT Percentage...some major findings
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:37:39 PM »
I was bored, and thinking about how bad we were 3PT wise, so I did some quick research...figured some of you would find these stats interesting:

Team 3PT% Rank (Top 25 rank AP except for SMC)

2 (23) Creighton: 42%
3  (3) Indiana: 42%
4  (2) Duke: 41%
18(13) Florida: 39%
26 (6) Michigan: 38%
32 (20)Memphis: 38%
39 (21 USA Today) St. Mary's: 38%
44 (24) Notre Dame: 37%
49  (1) Gonzaga: 37%

Interesting points:
**St. John's: #341/347 Division 1 schools in team 3PT% (27%)

**9/25 (36%) of the current top 25 teams are in the top 50 for team 3PT%.

We have a LOT of work to do. 341/347 will not cut it.

Biggest problem isn't our 3 point shooting. We don't play defense. We can't stop a team's good players. SJ has never been a good 3 point shooting team. We just need to be an adequate 3 point shooting team. With Sanchez, Harrison and Hooper, hopefully we can achieve that.

But it won't matter if we don't man up on defense.

I thought Creighton was overrated, Joe.

Statistically, we are at worst an average defensive team. Our opponent effective FG % is actually pretty good, we dont give up too many points per game, and we force turnovers at a reasonably high rate.

Biggest deficiencies are 3pt %, rebound rate, and free throws (% and attempts).

I don't want to change the topic, so this is all I will say about Creighton: they ARE overrated. But the pollsters absolutely love them, so get back in. I would have Villanova in over them without losing 1 second of sleep.

Do we need to shoot better from behind the arc?  Yes.
But showing that ranked teams shoot well isn't exactly breaking news.

Syracuse and Lousiville were both in the mid 230s in terms of ranking, barely above 30%.

All wee need to do is be adequate.

But the good thing is that experience makes you just a tad better in most parts of the game.  One or two extra shots made, maybe an extra steal, a few extra free throws, two more offensive rebounds.... It ll adds up.

And Marquette was like #313 ish...so obviously 3 pointers are not everything, but 341 is 6 spots away from the entire division I basement. We have a coach known as a recruiting guru no? So why doesn't he really focus in on a major 3 pt threat? I agree our problems also include rebounding but Sanchez and Gift help that a ton, plus Obekpa was just starting to get much better in that area. Our FT shooting must improve also.
