How amazing was the 84-85 team
« on: January 08, 2014, 01:20:54 PM »
Coming up on 30 years since the final four and it would be a good bet to say we will never reach those heights again. Even if Lavin stops doing his Gene Wilder impersonation from Young Frankenstein and somehow gets us into the tourney I think now is a good time to reflect on just how incredible that team was. Plus I am bored.

The team had the two best players we have had since I have been a fan ON THE SAME TEAM. That will never happen again that we have a Mullin and Berry on the same team. That team had :
2 Wooden award winners
2 All Americans
1 2nd team All American
6 pros
4 NBA 1st round picks
1 NBA all star
2 time Olympic gold medal winner
NBA Hall of Famer
Granted the last 3 were all Mullin. Though Berry'sNBA career was a dissapointment Berry did average 17.6 ppg one season
and 22 ppg in the playoffs vs eventual NBA Champ the Lakers.

Mark Jackson(it is a good thing 10 year old WASJU did not have a forum to vent on this), Shelton Jones and Ron Rowan came off the bench. Rowan, Jones and obviously Jackson played in the NBA.

That team has always been SJU fans go to team as far as what could be possible. I think coming up on 30 years we should just realize that was a once in a lifetime team and just hope we can get back to making the tourney every couple years.

If they would have played Gtown 100 times that year maybe we win 5. Bad matchup and they were allowed to mug Mullin for some reason.
BTW if we would have plaaed Nova 100 times that year we probably win 95 of them

Yeah but to be fair no one has 2 upperclassmen like Mullin and berry on their team anymore.  They don't stay that long. That team would trounce any team in the country right now and may not lose a game.  It's a different beast out there and top players like that won't stay til junior or senior year and certainly not two together.

Since then we had a damn good team w Malik and two damn good teams with Jarvis.  The 2011 team if DJ didn't go down was not on their level talent wise but could have gone just as far.  Final four is attainable here - just need the right coach.

The Jarvis Elite 8 team is the 2nd best team we have had since I have been a fan.
The Sealy team would get the nod for making the Elite 8 but actually if Jayson Williams would not have gotten hurt, I think the year before with Boo would have been a better team. Sealy team really only had one scorer and peaked at the right time.

We need to stop living in the past as a fan base.

We need to stop living in the past as a fan base.

They have ESPN Classic, every sports station shows classic games. They have oldies music stations, Hall of Fames and Museums. Nick at Nite shows old sitcoms and there is a station that shows old school cartoons. As soon as they start selling time traveling Deloreans I will be first in line.

The Mets, Knicks, SJU, cartoons, music(especially rap) were all better in previous decades. I think woman are hotter now, but I did catch some horrendous movie on some station flipping around where Racquel Welch is a bikini wearing parachute jumper that I actually watched for 45 minutes becuase she was so hot.

I guess I am getting old

You're living in the past, man. You're hung up on some clown from the '60s, man.

Fathom is the R Welch movie. I was a Lady in Cement fan but to each his own. The 70s were a simpler, drier time. Which is just as well: if they had as much porn around when I was a kid as they do today I'd have died of dehydration.
