St. John's has eye on two locals
Expect St. John’s to make a big push for two locals - forward Kevin Parrom and guard Omari Lawrence of South Kent (yukon.) Academy, formerly of St. Ray’s - who both have Big East credentials. I’ve seen Norm Roberts and the Johnnies’ staff everywhere I’ve been on the East Coast this summer. The Storm is also paying close attention to senior center Danny Jennings of Oak Hill (Va.) Academy and two juniors - guard Mike Poole of St. Benedict’s and forward Tobias Harris of Half Hollow Hills, L.I., among others. Maurice Wingate of NYCHoops is reporting they have already offered Harris.

The Storm may be closer to a breakthrough than we think.

Burrell didnt unlock anything...yet...omari says he likes him, and if he is one of the reasons omari comes then you can make that argument...and call me crazy but i dont even think omari opens the floodgates...but we sign omari, we got a shot at lance...we sign lance, or another top 15/20 recruit, then the local kids will look at us completely different...thats when the top city kids will come back........in my opinion of course :)

Totally agree...   but even if we sign these kids and the product on the court doesn't improve we will not move in the right direction...

The team needs to start winning some games and not get continually blown away on its home court...

This is exactly what im talking about re opening the floodgates. WHEN Omari Lawrence signs here it will open up some eyes. Norm has St Johns moving in the right direction

agreed with pmg.  the talent has to come, and then the competitiveness has to come, and then the floodgates open, &c.  Those floodgates need to include the DC area and/ or Georgia, though - there's talent down there as well.

the recruiting floodgates need to open before we become competitive...and hopefully Marco is right.

Completely disagree here. .

If the coach was strong and the team over achieved...   it would help open recruits eyes...

If the team played competively and didn't get constantly blown out it would help open recuits eyes...

If the team played a fun style of basketball it would help open recruits eyes..

are you telling me Rutgers has a strong coach, overachieved, played a fun style of ball and never got blown out?  I don't think they fit any of your criteria...

college basketball is all about recruiting...Recruiting is the lifeblood of a program and there is no way to survive in the Bigeast without it..."strong" coach or not...I guess its the chicken or the egg argument but to be truly competitive you need to have some real horses first IMVHO

Assuming they have attracted these players legally, Rutgers is an exception to the rule.
For the sake of the BE, I hope they don't have a recruiting scandal on their hands in a couple of years.

It depends on how you define strong coach...   at the very least he is a strong recruiter...   and like you said that is half the battle...

The kids are putting the faith in Fred Hill, not Rutgers...

Not a single one of Norm's primary recruiting targets has shown they have any faith in him...

I am not saying it is not about recruiting but kids would come if Norm gave them reason to...   and he has not...

p.s - Rutgers recruiting success will not last if Hill doesn't get the kids to perform on the court...

I'm pretty sure the name Fred Hill is not in anyone's definition of strong coach.  He has somehow convinced kids to go to Rutgers...only the good Lord and those players know how.

Obviously recruiting is affected by oncourt performance...but getting the talent on the floor is more important than coaching acumen in college basketball...plain and simple.

Hill has convinced kids to go to Rutgers because he is a hard worker, great guy & a very good recruiter. Plus, the recent success of the football program & the "rabid" fans at the RAC have helped him as well. Now he has to prove he can "coach" that talent. And the jury is still out on that one. I for one wish him luck because he is a class act who looks out for his players... much like Norm.

Could not agree more with your second point jj.
