Early Season Evaluations

1/4 of the season Evaluations

Marcus Lovett- solid player who will improve once frontcourt talent arrives who can actually catch the basketball and put it in the hoop
Shamorie Ponds- as good as advertised, can score, has toughness and will be a very special player
Bashir Ahmed- extremely talented with a very low basketball iq, plays out of control but can be a key component next year after he gets a year at the division 1 level under his belt
Kassom Yakwe- one dimensional player who has taken a step back. great at jumping straight up and doesn't get into foul trouble. plays scared on offense
Yankuba Sima- just doesn't do much of anything, soft as charmin, no offensive game and doesn't impact the game on defensive end either
Tariq Owens- has talent but seems like a player who would blossom under good coaching, looks lost most of the time
Richard Freudenberg- total bust so far, expected much more with the hype that was placed behind him
Malik Ellison- bust would be a complement, has a great basketball body just not a good basketball player, terrible touch from inside and from outside
Amar Alibegovic- should of let him leave when he wanted to, Obekpa Part II, looking forward for his graduation day
Fed Mussini- chucker, chucker, chucker. Plays better in blowouts when pressure is off and piles up the 3's

Coach Mullin- has gotten talent to come, mostly good kids but very little cohesion on offense and bad defensively. Have lost all 4 games against decent teams, maybe most embarrassing loss in program history against Delaware State and beat 3 total cupcakes. Jury is out on if he can actually coach

I've said it a bunch, but I think everyone will be singing a very different tune on Ellison by the end of the year.

He'd be wise to transfer at the end of the semester so he doesn't have to sit out all of next season

I would take Freudenberg over Ellison every time. RF is far from a bust and will prove it, if not this year by next year.

He'll improve his play during the in conference schedule?

He is going to be more athletic in a month?
Do they have something that will make Mussini taller in a month as well?

Fellini is shooting 49% from beyond the arc.

What's he shooting vs decent teams?

Lovett - better than expected
Ponds - as advertised; would like to see if he can play point.
Mussini - improved handle, but not looking for teammates on the break.
Ellison - expected improvement; looks horrible at times
RF - would like him to be more assertive on O.  Missed some open 3s and has zero points in 2 straight games.
Bashir - has no finesse and go to move is to try to run people over
Yakwe - no real inprovement from last year, but FT form looks good
Tariq - better than expected rebounder and shot blocker
Sima - has really improved shooting form.  Increased FT % and has worked on his baby hook from the left block.  Only player where there is real tangible improvement from last year.

BIGS - need to stop going for blocks so often and would rather they position themselves for defensive rebounding.

Lovett - Needs to do better as floor general
Ponds - as advertised, best player on the team
Mussini - needs to get involved early, agains better comp
Ellison- needs to make his mark on the defensive side. Enough said
RF - had some good looks, needs to start draining some. Great passing ability
Bashir - Streaky. Needs to play better under control, but can carry the team at times
Yakwe - Zero confidence. Needs to hit weight room
Tariq - Good big off the bench in spurts
Sima - has Shown some signs. Needs to put it together with the guards

Lovett- needs better teammates, especially big ones
Ponds-needs better teammates, especially big ones
Mussini- needs better height, quickness and overall athleticism. New haircut would also help. Looks like Eddie Munster.
Honestly he is in the role he should be playing and is only a problem if you need him to do more.
Ellison- needs to start thinking about visiting some nice D2 schools. I recommend Pace
Bashir- needs to understand that that thing around the guys in the striped shirts is used to call fouls
Yakwe- needs to play better
Tariq- needs to eat a cheeseburger or 12. Also has bad fashion sense. Don't like the underoos look under his uniform.
Sima- needs to grab rebounds
RF- needs for people to understand that he is not any good and won't have any impact on the basketball team. Bet he gets laid a lot though

The JJ Player of the Game tally, and it's a darn accurate measure, would say otherwise. You were close though.  He is second best.

Lovett- Better scorer then I thought, hasn't been the floor general that I expected but like his game and think he will improve
Ponds- Best player on the team, love his overall game and intensity. He will be one of the better players we have had play here
Mussini- I like the way he has played this year, needs to be more agressive because at times he disappears. Defense is slight better but still not good.
Ellison- Haven't really seen much improvement other then I think his stroke looks a little less mechanical. Feels like a guys to me who as an upper classment might really come into his own.
Ahmed- Fouls too much and settles for the three a lot. He isn't the slasher I expect but he can score in bunches and will improve with more games
Yakwe-Most disappointing player. No offense and his defense hasn't even been that noticeable
Owens- Like his game at times. He can shoot and block shots but needs to gain bulk for defense and rebounding
Sima- Stroke looks better but defense and rebounding leaves a lot to be desired
RF- Has upside but looks rushed and his stroke looks off. I think he will need time for his game to adjust
