I think its a great accomplishment that this is our first black president however I'm not sure how I feel about the media playing it up. I think its great to acknowledge it however I don't think it should be the main focus of reporting. In this day and age it shouldn't matter what his color is. I feel the same way about affirmative action and black history month as well.

Blacks fought hard to be on the same level as whites(in terms of human rights). Affirmative action doesn't put people on an equal plane nor does focusing 1 month out of 12 to acknowledge black history either. I know this has been brought up in other threads but I think we should all compete equally for jobs and I think we should celebrate black history every month as its history not just black history.

I'm looking forward to the speech coming up. Hopefully this is the change we need!

I guess you don't realize how big this is considering this country's racial history.  No problem with playing up that angle because it is Huge.  Its symbolizes a big turning point for our country.  This country has made good strides as far as race is concerned but this is a big symbol on how far we've come.

In a perfect world you're right affirmative action creates preferences based on race.  But affirmative action was set in place to create opportunity for minorities that weren't there before.  At some point affirmative action needs to go away but if it was never put in place then what?  There was inequality in our country and something needed to change.  Affirmative action wasn't the perfect solution but it sure did help.

As for black history month, again in a perfect world there would be no need for it.  It started because they were not included in our history books.  Now I haven't taken a history class in a while and they should be included now.  And hopefully its not just a chapter dedicated to blacks and they are included like everyone else.  But again it was a problem and while black history month wasn't a perfect solution it sure did help.

Playing that angle is polarizing.  The man is also half white.

I am happy for blacks in America and those of other races that now feel that anything is possible, because that is the type of country I want to live in.  A country that ANYONE regardless of race or religion can succeed with hard work.

With that said, I do caution making too much of this.  Anytime we concentrate on an individual's race or religion is takes away from being a human first and an American second.  Hopefully we can all move forward quickly as just calling him our president.

we can't ignore obama's race because of the impact his win is having on so many.

i do think it's ludicrous, however, that the news programs keep putting up a graphic telling us he's the first african american president in u-s history.  i mean, is there anyone out there who doesn't know that already?

I hope we can just start calling Obama an "American"

What do you currently call him (other than the N word), because the last time I checked he is an American.

Never called anyone the N word,so check yourself. Is he African or American? . OR is it the Kenyan African American President from Illinois. Now he is the AMERICAN PRESIDENT.

I'm actually going to just go ahead and not believe you because half of your posts have a racist tinge.

And the only thing worse than a racist is a closet racist. You should try growing a sac and just admit that you are.

Excellent point LJSA.
This is the same clown I called a bigot 4 posting the derogatory picture of Obama.

Excellent point! Whats so derogatory about posting a real picture of a Obama in a turban? Why is wearing a turban a bad thing and derogatory? Unless of course, tomintrailerbury is a closet bigot. Go back collecting your welfare and dont forget to park that trailer in a good spot

Yesterday I went with my girlfriend so she could vote a little after 6am. She had to vote in the bronx where she used to live. You could see the excitement on the voters faces while waiting on line. Old people and younger kids who were probably voting for the 1st time because they looked pretty young.

I'm not happy McCain lost but I'm happy for the country. He's too liberal for me but I HOPE he does well and makes us all proud. In some ways he's already made me proud because I see the exictement he has brought out in others and that makes me happy.

When George W Bush was elected I pretty much knew from day 1 he was going to suck and each day I got a little angrier. ( Newsman13 can attest to that. LOL )

With a left wing Pelosi I probably wont be that happy with what comes our way. I'd be a lot more comfortable if we had a republican congress so we could have checks and balances

BUT Day 1 Obama has a clean slate with me. If he governs from the center or close to it maybe I'd even vote for him in 4 years.

Several years ago when Barak gave a speech at the democratic national convention I said in the R&P forum on redmen.com that it was the best speech I've ever heard. You just knew then he was going places " I didnt know this fast :) ". Last nights was better i think. I think McCain gace his own best speech ever also last night.

Either way it's a great day for the country when more people get involved in the process in electing a president and we need to all make our govt whether it be federal, state or local more accountable to us the people

Yes....especially the man in your mirror.  YOU were the one referring to him as Hussein being derogatory towards him the last few weeks.  Are YOU ready to move past all of that nonsense?

Well said. What I said before too was not to diminish the accomplishment what so ever I just wish we don't dwell on it. Acknowledging it is one thing but focusing and dwelling is another. Its definitely an exciting time in america going into Queens today I saw so many Obama shirts on people's backs it was cool.
