Please dont get hurt.....
« on: June 01, 2009, 02:35:00 PM »
Which player is the most important to stay healthy? Which is the player we cant afford to lose if we were to have any success this year? If _________ goes down, the season can be disastrous.

We need everyone. I don't think you can limit this to just one guy.  I think if you want to put more importance on one area than another it would still be PG. Both Malik's are vital to this team's success in addition to the front court still being thinner than the wings spot.

There is no player on the St. John's roster who fits this bill, none of them are good enough to say that about.

I was wondering how long that would take.  ::)  So if Evans or Dj goes down, you dont see much of a dropooff?

absolutely not..    the entire roster is filled with the same type players...

If Booth goes down. . Stith, Horne or DJ can fill in

Evans: you could use Coker or Burrell @ center..

Lord knows we have enguys to man the 2/3/4 spots..    none of them are superstars and none of them are absolutely awful..

You think Coker can produce the same type of stats as Evans? If Kennedy goes down, who rebounds the ball as well as he does from that position?

There is a point to be made here about depth and dropoff as well.  There are teams who can lose a major part of their offense and be ok, because they have other guys who can make plays in one form or another.  But then there are squads who can lose one player - even if they player isn't "that good" - and that loss can really sink a squad.  Especially if that player is a defensive stopper, or other specialist.

I would say losing Malik Boothe would be really bad for the team. though Stith could technically fill in.  After seeing Quincy handle... I would stop there unless he drastically improves his handle.

Sean Evans is second, but I say this without knowing what the team will look like next year or how they develop in the offseason.  But Evans is the most likely interior player to log heavy minutes - he (surprisingly) is the least likely to pick up fouls defending inside.  Justin might be able to play 35 minutes and defend well, but he didn't last year; and Rob Thomas needed more stamina.

Also, Evans is a huge part of the one thing the offense does well - bang on the offensive glass.  It would be nice (and more effective) if it was Justin on the offensive boards... but that's the skill Evans brings to the table - hustle and offensive rebounding.  Someone else could pick up defensive rebounds in the rotation (if Kennedy was hurt); Coker if he could stay out of foul trouble, Brownlee (hopefully)... but no one else has the size and quickness that Evans has.

I think Malik Boothe getting hurt and even when he returned was favoring his hand would be the obvious answer.

boothe easy...nobody knows much about Stith.  And we saw we had no other PGs on the roster when Boothe went down last year.  Hopefully there isn't much of a dropoff from Boothe to Stith but without having seen him play the lack of depth at the PG spot is still a major problem.

I am in agreement with most of the other posters that we don't have 1 particular person who is the equivalent of a Lebron James to the Cavs. Therefore, you have to look at it from a position perspective. In that case, we have the least depth at PG and the most at the 2/3 position.

If Boothe gets hurt--no matter how good Stith is--we will be in trouble. You need two pure points to be successful.  We have a lack of ball-handling up and down the roster and the one thing Boothe can do very well is handle the rock.

The second player IMO is Kennedy.  He is really the only five we've got that can play extended minutes. Mase, Paris and DJ might be our best three players, but if any one of them goes down there is so much depth the loss in production can be mitigated.

I was at the Cincy game where DJ Kennedy got himself booted early in the 2nd half. We were killing them, and then it turned.

Without his moxy, and leadership, we couldn't compete.
He's out next captain whether he starts or not.

Great post Poison! Kennedys all around game and leadership is needed and sometimes is overlooked

This was a tough question, I thought for about 5 mins, before I responded

I would go with Evans we have a lot of potential depth with our PF/C but Evans & Rob are the only players who get it done with any consistency when given the minutes.Does anyone else get it done? Burrell? NO Coker? New JUCO guy???
Boothe has yet to establish himself as a Big East PG , before or after the hand injury. We beat our best opponents when he was on the IR. We are a better team with him on the court, but he does not change much with his low A/TO ratio.

Horne would be 2nd on my list

Boothe & DJ would be tied for 3rd on my list

I meant Evans.  That is like the 10th time I've mixed up their names.

I agree with Poison that DJ is tough to replace and I think we win the Cincy game if he stays, but we also didn't have Mase at that time.  Add to that Hardy, Omari, and Brownlee.
