Rob Thomas scholarship ?

What is his scholarship situation ?

Rob was originally an Sept 06 recruit.
Because of clearinghouse issues he was not eligible to play till Dec 07.

But I think he started classes on scholarship in Sept 06 or Dec 06.
Then he had that bad knee injury.

This is I think his 4th year @ St Johns.
Does he have 1 more full year ?
If he's unable to contribute/play (continuing bad knees),
can SJU use his 'ship in 2010, & let him finish on "need based "scholly ?

I feel like I have heard that kind of talk. He has one more full year, he's a redshirt junior and didn't play until half of his freshman year was over.  His redshirt year was for his academic issues; he didn't get more time from the NCAA than that. I am interested in seeing what the staff will do, because if Rob can't play... do they use his scholly on someone else?

But he can still get on the court and ball a little. And down low, he was pretty useful. I don't know what leeway coaches have to get their guys academic schollies to finish up their degrees, maybe someone can speak to that.

"Redshirt Junior" is an eligibility level.

I think he is a 4th year senior.
He started classes @SJU the year before Burrell,Malik, Paris DJ etc.

I've heard somewhere that they can't offer him something not avail to all students.
But is the rule any different if he already was on scholarship 4 years?

Dont get me wrong- I want Rob to play. If healthy he's integral.

Steve - as far as I know, Rob's already been granted the redshirt, so he already has a 5th year of basketball eligibility, meaning he has another year of basketball eligibility after this one, to answer that question.

But ball scholarships are at the behest of the basketball coach; if they can wiggle a way for him to study academically, and he and the team are agreed about his playing, then I'm not sure. 

Of course, this is just idle speculation; Rob, even as he has been, has given the team excellent minutes.

I am not saying they do this.... But... Couldn't the team pull is "athletic scholarship" and then let him become a walk on and then the school offer him a "needs based scholarship" to pay for his tuition, room, board, etc?

I'm quite sure you cant do that- would be too easy.

That wasn't the point of my original question. We all hope Rob plays.
My question was exactly what AMASE found with Siena.
Simply red- we never inferred pulling his schol- just replacing it with "need based" if medically unable to play.

That's what I meant to say. Replace his bball scholly with a needs based scholly.
