Critical Leadership Mistakes Over Past Several Years
« on: January 21, 2010, 10:26:47 AM »
* Lack of ability to make hard decision and bring in an experienced assistant coach with offensive capability. Glenn B. and Casey are not highly respected on any level.

* Not finding the dollars to retain the Young Life Guru, resulting in not landing either of the big three studs. No one can tell me this was a pivotal loss for the recruiting effort and further solidified perception of SJU not being a good option for most local kids.

*  Developing this Kansas approach of rotating nine or ten guys to wear out opponents. KU can do that with studs. Average players at best can't do that.

* Staying the course with Boothe simply reflects Norm's persona, one of limited ability, heart, but constantly being outclassed.

* Inability to embrace the fact that injuries, integrating new players and winning on the road are simply challenges that good coaches overcome.

Good post, paultzman.....

1)  COACH seems too stubborn to bring in someone who has offensive coaching capabilities....  Besides, they (the administration) can just fire Norm and allow a competent head coach coach this team and future Johnny teams.

2) I totally agree with you here, Paultzman.  I'm sure they could've found the necessary dollars to retain the "Young Life Guru."  I just felt they believe they could get those recruits without him.  WRONG!!!!  And, the perception of the St. John's still not being a place for most local kids rings like a tamborine.  C'mon!  It's not by accident those three kids not coming to Queens.

3) Once again....  COACH continues to use the same Kansas system that has yet to work here at St. John's....  I continue to say that we have average talent and a good coach would adapt his system towards the capabilities of his personnel.  Keyword: good coach.

4) Boothe can't cut on this level....  Unless, Boothe is on the floor with the Cleveland Cavs lineup then he's no use on this level.  I'm sorry, but he should've signed with a MAAC team.  Not to mention, I still do not understand why the staff didn't secure a signature from Malcolm Armstead....  And, he's only a sophomore!  Once again....  Coaching.

5)  Look at your latter comment....  "Good coaches overcomes."  We've already beaten that dead horse to the white meat and now to the bone.  And, we all know he's used injuries and integrating new players, as an excuse before.  So, what's his new excuse gonna be?  I can't win when we play all these games on the road?  Just an excuse-maker due to his shortcomings, as a coach and recruiter.

Please, administrators.....  End this circus in March.

Very good post!!

Just to add to the "staying the course with Boothe".  Not to pile on the kid....this is more of an assessment of Norm....when we play equal or better competition a novice can see that Boothe is outmatched.  I know Norm believes he's the team leader....but he doesn't make things happen.

Then to make it even worse....he starts Boothe with Evans and Coker.  Those are 3 players in the starting 5 that have limited offensive ability!!

We are 12-6 and 2-4 in the BE.  The schedule is daunting, but mathmatically speaking the season isn't over.  Roll the dice and take a chance with this...

Start:
1) Hardy
2) Kennedy
3) Mason
4) Burrell
5) Brownlee

Shorten the rotation to: Horne, Evans & Coker.  Boothe can get 10 minutes maybe!  What do you have to lose Norm!!!???

At this point, they might as well put the ball in Hardy's hands and see what he can do. Boothe can't give us more than some decent dribbling ability.

Exactly!!  At the current rate...this season is heading down the tubes quick!!  Norm needs to mix things up...preferably what I mentioned above and roll the dice.  For all he knows...that line-up could save his job.

If I see Dele, Evans and Boothe in the starting line-up Saturday...I'm gunna puke!

Right now, Evans really needs to see fewer minutes and Hardy needs to see more--- if he is hot.  When his J is off, you cut his minutes.  I agree that Boothe is a major liability on offense but after seeing Providence press us into submission, I'm not sure we have a better option at the 1.  With Mase back to help DJ and Hardy bring the ball up, maybe we can get away with it.  I think we will see a lot of 3 guard rotations in the Nova game.  We'll see how it works out.

Those are the 5 best players without a doubt and all of them have the potential to score the basketball.

I would say that I don't want to see your guy forced into the C role and would start Coker i/o Brownlee.  If you have four guys who have some offense in them it wouldn't be bad to have a guy behind them that can at least pose some level of defense.

I hear ya, and maybe Coker should start....but with the game on the line....that's the line up I want to see on the court!!

Coker is 6'11, yet even as a junior, he has no go to move.
If he's going to play like a center, he belongs in there, but he's hit or miss.

You never know what he's going to do.

Yesterday, I heard Norm reference our ability to play ten guys in the game to match Villanova's ability to do so. What simplistic, inane thinking. Most successful teams use the best seven of eight players in combinations to attack the particular weaknesses of opponents. Why force yourself to think and prepare Norm. Simply use the hockey approach and great things will happen. yeah! Stubborn man!
