These are lean days for St. John's and its fans, but Thursday night should provide an oasis in the school's desert of disappointment.

The World's Most Famous Arena will be awash with memories as the Johnnies' 1985 Final Four team will be honored at halftime of St. John's game against Louisville.

"They were the city's team," Hall of Fame coach Lou Carnesecca said of the team he led to within a game of the national title game 25 years ago. "There was something about the way they played that people still remember and think about that team. And they were all from around here. St. John's fans knew them from when they were kids playing at local high schools.

It's amazing how much one school can blow itself over one final four 25 years ago.

i'm sooo sick of hearing about st john's and 1985. it's like the mets and 1986..all both organizations cling to was one good run 25 years ago. and i was born in 1987 so maybe i'm the wrong person to say anything, BUT apparently its not that big of a deal to the ppl who were around for the 1985 team anymore either, since there was no one in the Garden tonight...hell even Jackson and Mullin weren't there..

I kind of agree - the school is really into the Final Four.  But it's a link to the tradition that was around when St. John's was the premier city school in the premier basketball city.  Times have changed a little bit.

However, when you liken it to the 1986 Mets, I have to point out a couple of differences: the Mets WON IT ALL that year.  And they were the toast of the town in a city that fetishizes the Yankees.  The '86 win also plays into a Met narrative of a whole lot of losing and then an unbelievable, homegrown win (see: '69), followed by an inability to sustain high-level success.

But you gotta remember when the times were good so you have something to aspire to.

??? Don't understand the love of '85. We lost and in my opinion underachieved. The draw cost us. If we played Memphis st in first round & Nova played it's perfect game against G Town, we would have beaten them by double digits in the final. Had agreat team but did NOT win title.
