Andy Ratuins in the mix?
Player of the Year
Several players received mention for the league’s most prestigious award – Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds, Syracuse teammates Wesley Johnson and Andy Rautins, Marquette’s Lazar Hayward and West Virginia’s Da’Sean Butler.
“I’ve thought about this a lot and it’s not easy,’’ Jeff Goodman, national college basketball writer for FoxSports.com, said. “It’s about as tough as deciding any post-season award. You can make a case for about five or six.
“To me, with Harangody being out at end of year, you remove him from the equation,’’ Goodman said. “Personally, I would go with Wes Johnson. I know a lot of Villanova fans will kill me, but Wes does more than score the basketball. He rebounds, he plays well in that zone, he’s unselfish. I’d go with Wes Johnson, but not by much.’’
The choice came down to Reynolds and Rautins for ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla.
“I am so torn between Andy Ratuins and Scottie Reynolds,’’ Fraschilla said. “If there’s an Andy Rautins fan club, I want to be president. But I’ve got to give it to Scottie. I think Scottie’s pulled Villanova’s chestnut out of the fire five or six times this season.’’
