He stood with the ball in his hands,the Madison Square Garden crowd roaring and rising to its feet — everything a player could ever want all around him. Even St. John’s coaching legend Lou Carnesecca, whose photos adorn nearly every wall in the building, was cheering him on.

For the final 17 seconds of Tuesday’s 73-51 St. John’s victory over Connecticut in the opening round of the Big East Tournament, Red Storm walk-on John Taubeneck was the toast of New York City.

“It was cool,” Taubeneck said. “It was kind of unexpected to get in in the Big East Tournament. We played so well and got such a big lead on them, that I was actually able to get in the game. I’m just thrilled to have been a part of it.”
