2011 Recruiting Class

Assume you were the new coach, how would you look to distribute the 9 scholarships the following year?? 

Anyone in particular you want?

Try and keep Grace to stick around?

I feel like a good coach will salivate at the opportunity to make a fresh new roster, but curious how you guys would do things.

Grace looks like a player. It would look pretty bad if we told him that we are no longer interested in him. The new coach, or should we just say Hewitt, needs to find a couple of Jucos, or quality transfers after this season if officially over.

However, if I were him, you do your best to get the best players available, regardless of age.

I go 4-5 freshmen (perhaps trying to get at least 1 prep kid who's a little older and more seasoned) 2-3 JUCOs and save the rest of the ships, unless good transfers from other school wants to come an.

There's no room for transfers unless someone leaves the current team.  So any transfers would have to come in 2011, or would mean that some player or two is run off.

I can't say who the team should get - everyone wants the best players available. And we don't know how players mesh with one another.  For all we know, Davontay Grace really hates one of the other city stars.  Maybe one of the other stars is an a-hole.  I don't know these cats very well. 

I would say that if they can find 2-3 suitable JUCOs (preferably 2, I think), they need to find at least one role-playing big man to rebound and defend, since big men take a little longer to develop.  There are college-ready scorers from the wing/ guard on the high school level - whether they are from New York or not.  And hopefully Stith or Omari (or Davontay) makes for a good lead guard in 2011. 

Smarts.  I hope to see a recruiting class with some smarts and athleticism.  I'd also like Evan Turner.  And Luke Walton.   

Assuming Roberts and Grace will still come... 2 JUCO big men. 1 JUCO PG. On the remainder, try to get the best available.

If I were Hewitt, I would target a six person class, with the hope that I can get 3-4 starters, including one immediate impact freshman (borderline or actual McDonald's All-American). It would set a tone for the 2012 class, which, unlike Roberts, a person like Hewitt would be leaning on to commit already.

Despite the population, this area doesn't produce nearly the quality bigs that he's become accustomed to seeing in Georgia. Unless he wants to adjust and do a 4 out/1 in offense a la Jay Wright, he'll have to go out of the metro area (he's already recruiting Tim Dixon), but he's certainly capable of it.

For a longshot starting five, I'd go after Quinn Cook as our point guard. In hs, he plays for DeMatha. He's a likely McDonald's AA and solid in all areas, but will also likely be a four-year college point guard (for college basketball fans and coaches, a best case scenario). His mother is originally from the Bronx (& Hempstead) and she lost her husband just over two years ago. He plays for DC Assault, a program that Hewitt has never gotten a player from.

Locally, go after Gibbs (with Sledge as the backup).

At the two, Dai-Jon Parker is an extremely athletic (getting recruited in both basketball and football) guard from Georgia. He's one of the better lockdown defenders in the class. He had trouble shooting the three at the City of Palms, but did as good a job as anyone at trying to contain Austin Rivers. Hewitt has already been recruiting him and he's being recruited by UConn, amongst others. It also never hurts to contact Tony Wroten, who is at least interested in BE basketball, and gauge his interest in the new St. John's

Locally, go after Myles Davis and have an assistant all over Omar Calhoun for the 2012 class.

At the three, Rodney Hood is a quality three that Hewitt has been recruiting out of Mississippi. He's 6'6" and already has a solid mid-range game. He's got top 50 potential.

Locally, Angel Nunez (with Jermaine Saunders as the backup plan)

At the four, Julian Royal is getting recruited at the highest levels and Hewitt has been in the hunt. He plays for a loaded GA high school. He's a bit of a hybrid, as he can face up and has improved his low-post moves.

Locally, Ryan Rhoomes

At the five, he's been going after Tim Dixon, a really athletic but offensively raw 5. I'd also call Marshall Plumlee to gauge interest. I know he loved visiting NY.

Locally, go after Desmond Hubert.

Don't worry about Davontay Grace.

You're tellin' me that Marshall Plumlee isn't totally set on going to Duke with his big brothers?

Meaning, Grace isn't good enough?

He can fill out a roster, but, if St. John's is finally serious about getting a top 25 caliber basketball program, then the coach can't lose a lot of sleep or use the increasingly valuable time in July on Grace.

I'm new to basketball recruiting. When does the 2011 class officially start and when does it end (NSD)? Also what is the typical amount of scholarships available?

Typically it's 2-4. At Saint John's it's 11.
