Interesting Mike Dunlap article from 2009

The article mentions that he was in Australia last July runnig a clinic and scouting Daniel Carlin--an Australian big that turned 18 this January.  The kid seems like the goods and was interested in coming to America to play college ball.  I am not sure if he has since signed.

Dunlap is referred to an "no nonsense" and a "defensive specialist" as well as "controversial" and "fiery."  He led the 36'ers to a 59-36 overall record over two years and took them to the championship, losing after his star player went down.

I like the history of success his teams have had on the court.  I also love the fact that he has these contacts in Australia, because these the the types of kids none of the top schools waste time on.

Sorry, Carlin turned 17 this January.  He is currently a junior and looks to be a member of the 2011 class. 

I'd have to assume he'd be a HUGE targed if he is not signed already.  He could be our starting center in 2011.

"No nonsense" is an understatement.  He often runs drills and practices for hours without a ball only working on footwork.  He has also been known to make players practice with heart rate monitors strapped on to see if they are pushing it or they are not working hard enough.

That's good.  The team's footwork isn't very good - on screens, on setting up for jump shots...

It'll be interesting to see how the staff interacts with eachother and acts as a whole.  A guy like Dunlap could be a polarizing force on a staff with a head coach that takes himself too seriously or doesn't know how to handle taking input from someone that probably knows more in a certain area.

Lavin seems like he wouldn't have a problem deferring to a guy like Dunlap or Keady for x's and o's.  I remember watching a Zona tournament game and thinking "This guy is crazy" (Dunlap) for running up to the interim head coach every ten seconds.  It would have driven me nuts!!!

Chiles and Mo Hicks will probably defer to Dunlap for x's and o's and player development and to Rico for conditioning and drills, because they have never ran the show at the college level.  Lavin-Dunlap could be interesting. 

I assume Lavin will just delegate the x's and o's (almost like a coordinator in football) to Dunlap with the understanding that he reserves the right to veto anything and make the final call himself.

However it works out, I feel sorry for our guys for the hell they will be put through the first month of practice!!!!  Get those alarms set for 4:30, fellas! 

First, I assume Steve Lavin, despite negative reports from UCLA, actually has some basketball thoughts himself about what he wants to run and how it should be done. 

And remember that Dunlap was sort of co-head coach with Pennell; theirs was a unique situation since Dunlap was offered the Arizona job first.  And I think that's just how they worked it out.  Dunlap might be very talkative to Lavin; but it seems like Lavin, from the outset, wanted to have strong voices in his group to manage.

mo hicks will be used for his pressure defense and his flex offense. he will have a say in the offense

if there's a better staff of assistants in the country, i'd like to know who they are.

i'm confident lavin can get them working together.

i'm looking for significant player improvement...significant x and o improvment...which will be reflected in the win-loss column.
