When Steve Lavin was first hired it was well known that he had intentions of putting together an All-Star staff. Slowly but surely it has taken form with the hiring of Tony Chiles, Rico Hines, and Derrick Wrobel.

Lavin stated in his press conference when he was announced as St. John’s 19th head coach:

In terms of staff, clearly I want to put in place talented, capable, hard-working and loyal assistant coaches. It’s critical that they have a familiarity not only with New York, and have an understanding of the unique dynamic of recruiting in this city at all levels, but also the Northeast. So assistant coaches that are familiar with the BIG EAST, the ACC — those recruiting territories are critical.

Naturally, in terms of Southern California, the West Coast, the Midwest, I’ve had experience in the Midwest as an assistant at Purdue and also covering the Big 10 for ESPN for seven years. So that part of the country I’m very familiar with and the West Coast is where I grew up and spent 12 years at UCLA. But don’t be mistaken, when you’re at UCLA, you’re recruiting coast-to-coast and you’re recruiting internationally.

Excellent news.

All we need to do is add Barry now for an A+ beginning to Lavin's tenure.

Great news...now let's get this thing rolling.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

As promised, Coach L. has assembled a solid staff, raised the profile of the program in the press, won a recruiting battle (and may win another) and worked his tail off with results. I for one am appreciative and excited about our future!!

Nice work with the scoop Dave.  This is news we have all been waiting to hear.  I had confidence that Dunlap was coming but im glad to see it will be official very soon.  Lavin keeps impressing, and hopefully will continue to by landing Remi.

Lavin is definitely getting things done. Love that Dunlap is on board and by the sounds of the salary he should stay on board. If he was getting paid like this I feel he would have jumped ship at the first opportunity which wouldn't have been good for the staff hopefully this keeps him here 3+ years at least.

Mo was in LA all weekend watching the Gauchos and shaking hands with the other coaches :).
The Gauchos lost to the Playaz, who are the best 17s in the country and Lavin should blanket, in the finale, but won enough to make the Peach Jam.
