How Patient Are We?
« on: August 03, 2010, 10:16:57 AM »
We'll return to this question closer to the season when more people are actively posting (and probably with a poll).  But let's get the ball rolling.  I know most of us are excited to see the direction the program will take in the coming years, but let's talk baselines for achievement.  how are we going to measure success and failure?  Not everything's going to come out smooth, not with a whole roster to turn over in a year; playing a lot of frosh is exciting, and they can win if they're good enough, but they can also be frustrating.

So after 2012-2013 - that's 3 seasons from now - what do you expect to see out of the St. John's program?  What are your realistic pie-in-the-sky goals for the program

What level of achievement is acceptable?

What would be unacceptable/ would have you calling for Steve Lavin to be fired?

My expectations for this year at the very least are for us to be an NCAA bubble team and at our best maybe a 10 or 11 seed and a win in the tourney. I expect us to have a top 15-20 recruiting class for 2011 and a another top class for 2012. I think in 2011-12 we will probably miss the tourney but 2012 is the big year to me because by the 3rd year Lavin will have his player and his system firmly in place and we could take off that year. I dont think a sweet 16 run is out of the question if the recruits come here like it seems they will. After what we have been through the last few years I can safely say barring any off the court trouble I will not be calling for Lavin to be fired. Im a guy who will always give a coach at least 4 years to prove himself. I think we need to be patient because the next two years might not be what we are all expecting but if we keep getting mentioned by these top recruits we will be making noise sooner than later so be patient fans.

I am tired of being patient. Maybe I am crazy but on selection sunday I am not expecting to be a bubble team. We have to be  in. I expect to win SOME games on the road. I expect not to fall apart in the second half. I expect the staff will make adjustments in games. I expect us to dominate home games. I expect to laugh at our rivals as I exit the Garden. I believe in our coach, he will get us top players. As a fan this is not the time to be patient. We have been patient. Now we have to be rewarded.

I think St. John's is a bubble team next year with a legitmate chance to make Tournament.

So much depends on league play and if any teams really play better. Seton Hall is a great example, they have the potential
to be outstanding next year but no one would be surprised if Coach Willard has a rough first year.

Good points.  What about the future (if you want to speculate that far ahead)?

Lavin has 8 seniors and an experienced staff to help work out the issues that Norm couldn't.

and no true Big East point guard, this hangs over the team like a big storm cloud.

I still think can be fine in the right system in addition to DJ running point forward. Many of our woes weren't due to personnel but rather scheming in my opinion. So many other teams got away without having a stud AA point guard (or Center).

I'd be disappointed if we don't make the tourney next year.  Senior laden team that should have won at least 3 or 4 more games last year if the guy on the sideline had a clue.  No way am i saying i'll be calling for Lavin's head if we don't though. That's just asinine.  That being said.

I predict Baldi will make at least 3 proclamations next year that " we could have done this with Norm".   Over under is set at 3.  I'll take the over.

Not to sound crazy but Lavin has to make the tournament next year. I think Norm would have had this team on the bubble and getting us in. Not getting in would be a major setback. Next year we have 10 scholarships to fill, in my opinion the only way we get the players we want is to win this year. If I was a top player I wouldn't want to play for a team that doesn't win no matter how cool the coach is.
