Why would Lavin do anything with a web site that is not officially tied to the school..? Is he even allowed to do anything with a non affiliated website..?

Im pretty sure Blue Planet is funded by the university.

Also not sure what to make of your 2nd question. Are you suggesting that Lavin doesn't talk to anyone besides university employees?

You have a fantastic way of posing questions, by the way. 

And I'm not sure that's true. A coach can reach out to students in all kinds of ways, as long as it's cleared by the media department of the school.  (He doesn't run afoul of NCAA rules even if he doesn't clear it.)  Coaches can't comment on unsigned players.  They probably can't fund a student website.  But I think they can talk to a student website - it shouldn't be different than talking to alums at a meet and greet or talking to students camped out to buy tickets. Why would you think it was different..?

On topic, though - Dave is much more into the school spirit issues than I am (it's why he started this site), but everyone can see that, even accounting for the product, the school needs to get better fan and student support.  Build the brand. Get kids involved.  The one thing I am confident about Lavin doing is improving the brand of St. John's basketball. 

Duke Blue Planet claims to be the official home of duke basketball.  I'm sure it's duke affiliated.  Duke Basketball Report is a site like johnnyjungle/redmen.com that is unofficial.

I imagine the official nature of it has a HUGE deal with it.  Why wouldn't Lavin just do a similar thing and put up the link on redstormsports?

1) Yes, it's produced by Dave Bradley. It was set up as a means of getting the program's message out there to their fans directly and attempting to counter what they felt was growing negative coverage locally. Ditto the Coach K Show on XM/Sirius, formerly with Dave Sims and now Gary Williams.
 
2) It tends to depend upon the head coach and their relationship or comfort level with their respective fan sites. In certain cases, some feel that it helps build fan support/loyalty and additional patience during down times.

There are several other high-profile programs that have either tacit or openly helped their "unofficial" sites. A large "unofficial" Kentucky blog, for example, has received much better access under John Calipari than they received under Billy Clyde G. A very large Indiana affiliate site has had an on-and-off relationship with Crean.

3) Yes, just as he is theoretically allowed to conduct a sit-down interview with New Amsterdam News or News 12 Connecticut. Many of these unofficial sites conduct postgame reax or interviews, for example. I don't know if Dave has spoken with St. John's latest SID about getting media credentials so that he or one of his members can do that for this upcoming season.
