Way to cherry pick the one statement for the title of the thread.  The guy doesn't even back it up.

  from same article:

St. John's may have made the best hire of the offseason when it tabbed Steve Lavin to replace Norm Roberts. Lavin is a solid coach, but his energy and personality will be his biggest assets during the early stages of his tenure. St. John's needs to step it up in recruiting -- especially in the New York area. Lavin already is making strides.

The only mistake SJU made with Lavin was not hiring him 3 years ago.

Baldi how can you not be 100% behind the Lavin hire after seeing what Norm Roberts did to this program?

From David Fox:

St. John's plucked Lavin from ESPN even after his UCLA tenure was not particularly impressive.

How was it not impressive? Dude went to 6 sweet 16's in 7 years? (I forget the exact off the top of my head) and he brought in a few top 5 recruiting classes. Damn. I'd hate to see his standard for impressive.

My real question is why is a football guy writing about basketball?

The author of this article is not only an ass for saying that Lavin didn't do well at UCLA, but he named 3 minor leaguers, and claimed they were better hires.

It's the summer, so i suppose sometimes writers just write to stir things up.

you know the writer is a $#@&head bc even if he regards lavin as a failure for not winning a title at ucla, how is it not a good hire for st johns, after all the top tier coaches turned us down...were we supposed to hire cluess or willard?

Cluess' and Willards name was talked about for the position no?

yes...and were we supposed to hire them over lavin?  did the writer go to ucla? bc ive yet to hear anyone outside that stuck up circle say something like "less than impressive" about lavins career...we have a top 5 coaching staff right now and we all know it, and the recruits know it too...maybe someone should tell this joker it too, if hes gonna be writing about the sport

There are gonna be some questions about Lavin.  I can see the beef about his UCLA teams (if not UCLA fans' vehemence about how much they hate him. They need hobbies. Or more sun).  But man, if Willard was hired (which I would have approved of), people would talk about how cheap St. John's is.

And if Cluess was hired... I honestly think the school would be sunk.  Maybe as much as if Mark Jackson was hired.  Cluess can coach, they say, but is he the media frenzy that is Lavin?  Can he be chummy with recruits and their handlers?  Does he have deep contacts?  I am a big fan of a guy who can really get a lot out of his players, but you have GOT to get the players.  And coming from a D-II school, with no national rep, that would not have worked.  It's great for Iona. Not for St. John's.
