Too many guards ?
« on: September 03, 2010, 10:24:20 AM »
We know Lavins "Noah's Ark" quote- " 2 of each"

But a perfectly rounded class might have 3 guards, 3 forwards 1-2 ctrs,
 & save 2-3 for 2012. (we have 1 p/g, 1 wing & 1 fwd already (Stith,Roberts & Pelle)

Talking guards only,we are on the final (3?) list for:
  Tavon Sledge  &  D'angelo Harrison
and final 5 (7?) for Greene,  Cook,  Brown & Tharpe

What if Sledge, Harrison & Greene all want to commit next week ?
I say take all 3,  & if Cook, Brown or Tharpe want to commit later, take 1st one?
Or do you take 1st two, pause & reevaluate ?

What a nice problem to have !!
All this might be moot after this weekend with other speculation though ?

I don't think Sledge would come if we sign another point guard.

He has the ability to be a starter in the Big East and will go to s school where he sees that as a real possibilty. I bet you see other schools come calling if he doesn't sign with St. John's soon. I know he has his list cut to three/four schools currently but he could have a monster Senior year and open up other options for himself.

Sledge has 3 schools on his list, but Tharpe has many more. It looks like Sledge would committ (verbally) before Tharpe.

At the moment, he has no Big east or power school offers.
Only UTEP & Iowa State. Seems the Majors will wait out his senior year.

He has to realize that any "Big" school (can we finally include us ?)
will recruit as strong a PG as they can, which will probably be over him

I agree w Steve. If Sledge were that good, the local programs would be recruiting him harder.

Nothing personal against him, but I'm ready for a pg taller than an average 7th grader.

The Noah's Ark thing was a nice catchphrase, but I think we'll see eight new guys, three of whom are guards. I expect a point guard, a shooting guard, and a legit combo guard. Stith and Roberts will fight for minutes, although I just read Dave saying that the new staff likes Stith, so we'll see.

I think we enter 2011-12 with 11 players, most of whom can play at least two positions and do it well.

We'll bank two scholarships for the following class and with so few spots to fill the staff can go balls-out for a monster name.

I think the " noah's arc " thing was also part of a plan by Lavin in changing the perception of the program and also not to scare off recruits.

He's telling everyone up front that he plans on playing a lot of players and there is going to be plenty of playing time for everyone with his style of play.

That way other coaches cant plant seeds in potential recruits heads about potentially getting recruited over etc.

I think it was a pretty smart idea by Coach
