The Steve Lavin era at St. John’s began with sacks of food for the homeless in People’s Park in Berkeley, 2,500 miles from campus. Next week he and his basketball team will make a run to Alaska, after they swerved back home for the first regular-season victory in the Lavin era.
Sounds like a wild ride, almost like the 79-66 triumph over Columbia in the home opener on what seemed to be Wednesday night, when St. John’s led by 12 early, fell behind by 6, then wore down the Lions with sheer talent.
