It was hard to tell which team had been undefeated and which one had suffered bad losses last week to Fordham and St. Bonaventure.

But St. John's used a big second-half push to turn a close game into a 85-69 win over previously unbeaten Northwestern at the Garden last night to win the Holiday Classic for the first time since 2005 and put that two-game skid in the rear-view.

"It was a good test because we're gonna see this type of offense a lot in the Big East," said St. John's guard Dwayne Polee, who finished with 10 points.

The Red Storm (7-3) went on a 19-7 run midway through the second half to take the lead for good with 11 points scored by senior forward Justin Burrell, who finished with 17. D.J. Kennedy provided the exclamation point for the spurt with 5:58 to go with a rim-rocking dunk that gave the Red Storm a 69-57 cushion. Dwight Hardy led St. John's with 24 points and Justin Brownlee added 21.
