NEW YORK -- Not long ago, when Frank Sinatra started crooning "New York, New York", the last call at Madison Square Garden, it was hard not to note the irony.

As the scattering of St. John’s fans would make their way toward the exits, melancholy and shuffling after another tepid performance, Ol’ Blue Eyes would insist, ‘Start spreading the news,’ but really what news was there to spread?

That the Red Storm again was average?

That New York City basketball served as a pipeline everywhere around the Big East but its own back yard?

Which was why the plea from the public address announcer following St. John’s 60-59 win against No. 4 Pittsburgh said as much about the importance of the victory as anything.

NEW YORK -- Madison Square Garden has been a second home to St. John's basketball teams over the last eight decades.

This current team has turned the building at 33rd Street and Eighth Avenue into a house of horrors for highly ranked teams.

The latest of the Red Storm's five wins over teams regarded as the best in the country was a heart-stopping, come-from-behind thriller over No. 4 Pittsburgh that has the players thinking of joining the ranks of the ranked themselves.

"I can't wait," St. John's forward Justin Burrell said of the Red Storm moving into the top 25. "It's been a long four years without that number. We deserve to see that number."

It's actually been just over a decade since St. John's was in The Associated Press poll.

NEW YORK -- A quick take on St. John's 60-59 win over No. 4 Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.

WHAT IT MEANS: Thanks to Dwight Hardy's dramatic, acrobatic, last-second, underhand flip-in, St. John's improved to 17-9 overall and 9-5 in the Big East. The Red Storm beat a top-5 team for the second time this season and now have five wins over top-25 teams. And on Monday, St. John's will most likely be ranked in the top 25 in the nation for the first time since Nov. 28, 2000.

Pittsburgh falls to 24-3 and 12-2 in the Big East.

St. John's cut another giant down to size Saturday afternoon at the Garden.

The Red Storm rallied from a five-point deficit in the final four minutes and overtook fourth-ranked and Big East-leading Pittsburgh for a 60-59 victory. Dwight Hardy made the game-winning shot with 1.2 seconds to play when he drove the right baseline, cut toward the free throw line and flipped the ball in over his head.

ith under four minutes remaining and his team trailing the No. 4 team in the country by 2 points in a tense, tournament-style atmosphere at Madison Square Garden, St. John’s Steve Lavin gathered his players during a timeout.

“This is Madison Square Garden,” Lavin told the Johnnies before his team pulled out a dramatic 60-59 victory over Pittsburgh on a last-second underhanded, flip-in layup by Dwight Hardy. “You’ve got this place electrified. You’re playing with your best friends, and you’re playing at Madison Square Garden. This is fun. It’s about enjoying this moment and playing with passion.”

Despite the string of victories over elite teams and the program’s likely first NCAA tournament bid since 2002, Burrell wasn’t prepared to say the Johnnies are back yet.

“I don’t want to say that, man,” he said. “We just have to go out and play games every day. We haven’t arrived yet.”

St. John’s has burnished its N.C.A.A. tournament résumé by making a habit of upsetting top-10 teams at Madison Square Garden. Now, with the Red Storm seemingly assured a bid, it is most likely playing for style points and seeding.

“It’s still a game. I felt there was a stretch we were playing joyless basketball. I said: ‘This is Madison Square Garden. You’ve got this place electrified, and you’re playing with your best friends. This is fun.’ ”

Burrell laughed and said, “He doesn’t really coach.”

Carnesecca was known for his homespun style of coaching, keeping the players free from the pressure of being the biggest college program in New York City.

Lavin's not far off.

"He's calm. He's the calmest out of everybody, just sitting there smiling and tells us we're going to win the game and to stick with it," Hardy said of Lavin, who returned to coaching after seven years as a TV analyst. "He talks to each of [us] individually as the huddle breaks. He tell us what he wants from us and to play basketball the way we've been playing since we were 5 years old. He's a wonderful coach. He relates to us 'cause he's like a kid."

Lavin, whose team will be ranked Monday for the first time since Nov. 28, 2000, says he’s become more “even-keeled” as he’s gotten older and is “a little more calm” compared with his first coaching tenure at UCLA, which ended with his firing.

“He’s the calmest out of everybody,” senior forward Justin Burrell said. “Just sitting there smiling, telling us we’re going to win. He’s a wonderful coach because he can relate to us. He acts like a kid. He’s talking about what we’re going to do after the game. He doesn’t really coach. I don’t know what he’s doing.”

Mary Ann said her husband was looking for the right coaching job, the right school, and the right city. Steve was a San Francisco native and a West Coast coach, "but he's really more of an East Coast guy," his wife said. "He's always loved New York. St. John's is a dream job for him."     :)

At the end, the Garden sounded the way it sounded when Looie Carnesecca wore that sweater, and Chris Mullin never hesitated to shoot the ball over Patrick Ewing.

It sounded as if Carmelo Anthony had just strolled onto center court arm-in-arm with Amar'e Stoudamire. It is the way March used to sound when they were St. John's Redmen, when Walter Berry stood defiantly between Pearl Washington and the Big East tournament championship. Red Storm Rising officially became Red Storm Risen yesterday. Risen behind coach Steve Lavin to an expected national ranking for the first time in a decade.

What else can you say about the Pitt/St John’s game that just concluded an hour ago on a Dwight Hardy baseline drive?

Hardy put Pittsburgh‘s Gil Brown in the spin-cycle on a beautiful hesitation/look back move before finishing at the rim for the 60-59 St. John’s win.

NEW YORK -- In the final, frantic minutes at Madison Square Garden, with 14,514 fans standing and cheering and forgetting -- for the moment -- all about Carmelo Anthony, Steve Lavin was not coaching basketball as much as he was managing the human condition.

Pittsburgh and St. John's had been playing a game Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler would have loved, and it appeared the Red Storm would end up buried in a pile of fourth-and-1 dust.

During games, Keady files notes on every play, every game sequence, for Lavin and the rest of his staff. Keady does this for St. John's practices, too.

"So, that's 61 practices thus far this season and 25 games,'' Keady said. "I've got four full legal note pads full. I guess it's really good I have it in the games. It keeps me on the bench and out of the officials' hair.''

The Red Storm has now wiped out five nationally ranked teams at this cherished arena. Its latest victim was Big East-leading Pitt, the nation's fourth-ranked team and a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Best game of the weekend: Forget the Knicks and Nets. How about Carmelo-to-the-Johnnies as Dwight Hardy's sidekick? Wouldn't that be the better story, at this point, given the way St. John's is playing? Hardy drove and scored with 1.2 seconds left Saturday to give the Red Storm a 60-59 over Pittsburgh and their fourth win over a team ranked in the top 12 of the latest Top 25 (and one). Did Hardy step out of bounds on the drive? Perhaps. But if he did, the referees missed it. So it's a moot point. And suddenly Steve Lavin is a serious candidate for Big East and National Coach of the Year honors.

It might have taken his worst performance since January to get the proper attention, but Dwight Hardy is finally shedding the “underrated” label at the right time.

Hardy struggled from the field for 39 minutes, but made one of the most impressive shots of the year – a twisting reverse lay-up along the baseline – to lead St. John’s to a 60-59 victory over Pittsburgh.

The Red Storm essentially locked up an NCAA Tournament bid and could be in position for a top-five seed come Selection Sunday. They have six top-25 wins, tied for the most in the country, and are tied for third-place in the Big East. Since January 3, St. John’s has picked up wins at home over Georgetown, Notre Dame, Connecticut, Duke and now Pittsburgh.
