Prior to last night’s tipoff between St. John’s and Lehigh, Steve Lavin ignited Carnesecca Arena, making his unannounced return to the bench.
And then, things got interesting.
The Red Storm’s second-year head coach, who underwent successful prostate cancer surgery, looked as healthy as ever, running, jumping and screaming on the sidelines as he watched St. John’s (2-0) overcome a 16-point deficit to defeat Lehigh 78-73 in the second game of the 2K Sports Classic.
“It’s good to be back, but when you’re down 16, you’re thinking maybe you should’ve waited until Sunday to come back,” Lavin said. “When you come back you’re immediately reminded of the rigors and the challenges of coaching. It was probably as challenging a game as I coached in my career formany reasons.”
