MR. PERFECT: God'sgift Achiuwa was 6-for-6 from the field, and 9-for-9 from the foul line, finishing with a game-high 21 points (and seven rebounds). Lindsey and Moe Harkless chipped in 15 points apiece. D'Angelo Harrison had 12.

WORRISOME: St. John's was outrebounded by Lehigh, 32-27 -- including 15-6 on the offensive glass. No offense, but Big East teams should not get outrebounded by Patriot League teams. Also, St. John's had just seven assists on the night, on 23 field goals.

Those fans who were already in the stands gave Lavin a huge round of applause. Lavin waved and pumped his fist in the air in response.

The cheers grew louder when Lavin was introduced after the starting lineups, with the student sections chanting, "We love Lavin! We love Lavin!"

The night started with all smiles - there was no way that it couldn’t have.

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin returned to the court Wednesday night after missing more than a month following prostate cancer surgery, spreading good feelings all through Carnesecca Arena. Against Lehigh there were a lot of tense moments, but the Red Storm made sure the evening ended on the same kind of good note.

Prior to last night’s tipoff between St. John’s and Lehigh, Steve Lavin ignited Carnesecca Arena, making his unannounced return to the bench.
And then, things got interesting.
The Red Storm’s second-year head coach, who underwent successful prostate cancer surgery, looked as healthy as ever, running, jumping and screaming on the sidelines as he watched St. John’s (2-0) overcome a 16-point deficit to defeat Lehigh 78-73 in the second game of the 2K Sports Classic.
“It’s good to be back, but when you’re down 16, you’re thinking maybe you should’ve waited until Sunday to come back,” Lavin said. “When you come back you’re immediately reminded of the rigors and the challenges of coaching. It was probably as challenging a game as I coached in my career formany reasons.”

Storm rally tops Lehigh in Steve Lavin's return
Steve Lavin showed up at Carnesecca Arena before Wednesday's game. But it was hours before any control by his basketball team materialized in an eventual 78-73 non-conference victory over Lehigh....

Notes & quotes: Though yesterday was national signing day for recruits, St. John's officials said they
did not expect to sign anyone until the spring

Wow ?   I realize they cant say they expect a specific student to sign,
But they dont expect Wood, Garrett or Pelle to sign this week ?

No matter how you slice last night’s game, one thing was clear at Carnesecca Arena.

This one was for Lavin.

On a night when head coach Steve Lavin shocked everyone with his unexpected return following successful prostate cancer surgery last month, his St. John’s (2-0) team overcame a 16-point deficit to narrowly escape Patriot League opponent Lehigh (0-1) by the final of 78-73.
