Rapid Reaction: St. John's 91, Providence 67

HOT SPOTS: Freshmen Moe Harkless and D'Angelo Harrison, who were tied for the team lead in scoring (14.2 ppg) coming in, were both outstanding for St. John's on Tuesday night -- particularly Harkless, who had a career-high 32 points and 13 rebounds, shooting an incredible 14-for-17 from the field. Harrison added 25, on 8-for-12 shooting.

Freshmen Moe Harkless and D'Angelo Harrison had season highs of 32 and 25 points, and St. John's opened Big East play with a 91-67 victory over Providence on Tuesday night, snapping the Friars' seven-game winning streak.

Phil Greene, another freshman, had 12 points for the Red Storm (6-6, 1-0), who won their third straight after a three-game losing streak and had a season-high for points. The previous best was 82 points in a 24-point win over UMBC.

A year ago when St. John’s coach Steve Lavin was assembling a highly-regarded recruiting class he talked about how much talent and speed and court-smarts the Red Storm would have. On Tuesday night his vision of the Johnnies came to life on the floor of Carnesecca Arena.

Lavin was not there to see it – still out while recuperating from prostate cancer surgery – but St. John’s kicked off the Big East season with its best game so far, blowing past Providence and rolling to a 91-67 victory before a sellout crowd of 5,602.

D’Angelo Harrison entered the interview room a few minutes after Moe Harkless last night, so he was not aware that his teammate had just made history in St. John’s 91-67 wipeout of Providence in Carnesecca Arena.
“You set a record for most points?’’ Harrison asked innocently as he followed the line of questions being posed to Harkless by reporters.
“Yeah,’’ said Harkless, pointing to the stat sheet which showed him with 32 points in his freshman Big East Conference debut.
Harrison gasped, “Damn!’’
“That’s what I said!’’ said Harkless.
“I broke Allen Iverson’s record, and Troy Murphy’s,’’ said Harkless, sounding very much like a freshman.

On the first night of Big East play in this 2011-12 season, St. John's made some serious noise.

The young Red Storm blew the Providence Friars right out of Carnesecca Arena, 91-67. And in the process, freshman forward Moe Harkless broke a record previously held by Allen Iverson.

Not bad for your first Big East conference game, eh?

Think of all the great basketball names that have come through the Big East. Now, put the name of St. John's Moe Harkless at the top of one very impressive list. His 32 points in the Red Storm's 91-67 blowout of Providence last night in front of a Carnesecca Arena sellout crowd of 5,602 set the record for a freshman in his Big East debut.
