explain the rpi to me why is it so important

basically its strength of schedule in a formula

The basic RPI formula is 1/4*(Winning Percentage) + 1/2*(Opponents' Average Winning Percentage) + 1/4*(Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage)

it can be explained further in this link
