Most memorable performances by a St. John's player
« on: December 06, 2007, 11:05:21 PM »
Obviously Bootsy droppin' 40 agaisnt Duke at MSG tops my list, but I'd love to hear some of the more obscure ones.

My obscure one I was thinkin' of was in Felipe's freshman year the boys went to Michigan early in the season, playing Michigan with the remaining 2 of the fab 5, I believe C-Webb, Howard, and Rose were all gone?  Or maybe Howard was around still?  Anyways the Johnnies won, and my boy JAMES SCOTT went off for about 30 points in Ann Arbor with a fantastic shooting performance.

I might be wrong, but I believe Chudney Grey's play AT Niagara sticks in my mind...I think he only went for 15ish or so, but I believe Barkley was out and Chud really stepped up and did a great job in his place.  Always remembered this as "Chudney's game."

Howbout any others out there, esp. the obscure ones, would love to hear some that made impressions on you guys...

I was a senior in highschool and St. John's sent my family and I ticket to go see St. John's vs Duke. Duke was amazing at the time and I remember watching and St. John's was climbing back in and climbing back in. The Garden was going crazy as they had no answer for Marcus Hatten. Hatten goes to the FT line with no time left and sinks it...St. John's wins the students charged the court and I was sold. The dream of the Jungle began....

How about when Chud stepped in, in the Big East Tourney final, because Barkley was crying in the locker room?

Poison, you are really the master of taking positive posts and threads and making sure to get a shot in at someone whether its Mase in the past, or Barkley now.  What's the need for it?

I'm a little older than most.

Not one game but the whole season- Walter Berry 1986

Reminded me of the one season that Bernard King had w the Knicks.

The year after the final 4, Mullin graduated & Walter had the best
season I ever saw put up by a St Johns player. That season put him
in the top 5 all time St Johns single season records for:

Scoring Average
Shooting %
Rebounds
Free throws

1) Marcus STEALING the game away from Duke -- My most exciting moment as a SJU student

2) Next game Marcus dropped 44 on Sr. Night at the Garden (he definetely could have had 50 if he didnt try to take the easy way out and hit 2 3's lol)

3) As a kid, watching Bootsy light up duke for 40

4) A weird one but for me when we beat NC State in the Holiday Festival ... Holding them to 10 pts in the 1st half was simply unbelievable

I'll never forget  Ron Rowans corner swish & Berrys block under the basket on "Pearl" at the Big East Tour. Johnny's win the Tourn. My hands are still red from hitting the  A/C duck work, in the cheap seats. 1986

1. Ron Rowans jump shot to win 86 Big East Championship.

2. Kevin Williams OT shot to beat UNC in '82 Hall of Fame game Springfield Mass vs Jordan led Tar Heels.

3. Russell-Goodwin-Mullin beating a great BC team that beat SJU twice in regular season to win 1st ever BE championship in 83.

4. Artest-Barkley team that decimated Bobby Knights Indiana team in 2000 NCAA's giving the Hoosiers their worst ever defeat in NCAA's.

5. Boo Harvey beating like 3 or 4 teams his senior year with last second buzzer beaters. Dave Halberstam at the mike going crazy!

Mullin's 33 at Georgetown in 1984. Single best performance by a Johnny in recorded history. At the time Dickie V said it was the best performance he had ever seen.

Tie: The McIntyres (Kenny and Bobby) against Nova in the 65 NIT final (Joe Lapchick's finale) and Marcus Hatten's icing of the game against Duke in 03 -with a foul shot and no time left on the clock. Lot of others and lots more to come.

Mark Jackson's 34 points(10-12, 4-5 from "downtown") in an OT win against G-town his senior year at MSG was pretty damn impressive..  8) .. Jax & Reggie Williams were going basket for basket during the final minutes of regulation & most of the overtime... Just a GREAT friggin' basketball game..  ;D .. peace!
