When discussing this ppl need to stop including unlv, temple, Memphis, umass, sdsu in your ideas if you are eliminating Louisville uconn, rutgers, etc.  they are all football schools.  I can't imagine a scenario where st johns grown nova et al stick around w football schools if the traditional big easy playing schools are gone bc then we are just part of old conf USA or something.

St johns
Grown
Nova
Providence
The hall
Marquette
Depaul
Butler
St Louis
Xavier
Mason
VCU

12 team bball only league.   I'm fine getting rid of st Louis or one of the va schools for Dayton too.  Could even add Davidson if you prefer to go further south.  Lots of decent options of non FBS schools

That being said I'd prefer this league:

St johns
Grown
Nova
Hall
Depaul
Marquette
Prov
Xavier

Uconn
Memphis
Louisville
Rutgers
Cincy
Temple.

Yes I left out some current members.  Basketball schools should take a hard line stance and say we are leaving.  You can stick w us in all but football, or not at all , but we don't want these bullshit schools in our basketball and other sports leagues.  If uconn rutgers Louisville Cincy could have gotten into the sec acc or big 12 it would have happened already.  We have the power.  Not them.  Make them form a football only league.  Even let them call it the bg east.   But 14 for basketball and all else and it's a strong league at that.  Even better for them they don't have to share their football revenue.  Win win.  ESP for us.

Before that they were basically independent like many others but at one time we played in the Metro Conference

the ecac was and is more of support "conference" than anything else.  st john's did belong to several so called conferences back in the day, but none provided automatic entry into the ncaa tournament.  we were still considered to be independent.  take the new jersey- new york 7, for example.  at the time, columbia and princeton were still in the ivy league.  rutgers was in the eastern independent basketball league which held a tournament where the winner would go to the tournament.

at one point in the mid 70s, the ecac broke the east down to four regions with the top four in each region taking part in a mini tournament with the winner earning an at large bid to the dance.  that was after the ncaa expanded from 24 teams to 32.

the ncaa took care of the tv contracts.  there was no benefit to joining a conference.  after the conferences were allowed to make their own deals, the big east was formed.  the rest is history.
