Practice before and after midnight madness

what is the difference?

my understanding of midnight madness is that it's the official start to the season, which means practices can begin.  but it's obvious our team has been practicing since the summer.  so what's the difference?

Used to be the difference between official organized team practices and several guys getting together, on their own, in an informal shoot around. Not sure if that still applies.
