Ongoing Mistakes??????
« on: December 16, 2013, 08:06:20 AM »
1) In both the Penn State Game and yesterday, we had their key player in foul trouble (Frazier - Fair)  and failed to get the extra foul called....those players went on to beat us at the end.  We should have gone at them right away.  Fair played w three fouls for a good chunk of the second half....Frazier w four.

2) Harrison can't try to win the game by himself on offense.  It will work sometimes, but more often than not it won't.  We now have a complete team.  Yesterday, it was working when Jordan was penetrating, but then Harrison took over. BTW, FWIW, I love Harrison but.....

3) Could have used God's Gift just for five or six minutes to help w our foul trouble and to lean on their bigs.

4) Give Hooper an early chance to bust or open up their zone.

5) Failed to take advantage of our depth by forcing opponent to go nine or ten deep.

We are improving in every game. NCAA's here we come....would have liked another win or two but seems Coach will have us peaking at the right time.....next year will be amazing. (Not saying we won't make Tourney this year, but next year will be amazing.)

Unless you want to kill Sampson there is really nothing to complain about. They are ranked number 2 in the country and we had a shot to win. Free throws were a problem but we are not a great free throw shooting team and we were bound to start to missing. They came at a terrible time.

Everybody other than Fordham(the team and the poster) knows we can't shoot from the outside. I give Lavin and the team credit for not falling into the trap and just start hoisting threes against the zone. Anyone remember the Ingram game game against Cuse zone  his frosh year. I think he went 3-20 or something.

Here is the thing about Hooper that you all need to understand. Lavin does not like one dimensional players. Coaches generally have a hard time going against what they are comfortable with especially if they have had success. Hooper is not going to get consistent minutes and I actually understand it and I am not going to criticize Lavin for it. If there is a criticism is that Lavin in the future needs to recruit athletes that can occasionally knock down some threes. That is the real problem. You don't need specialist shooters if you have rotation guys that can at least keep defenses honest. We don't have that.

One final note. I am going to give coach credit for realizing Jordan needs to play way more than Greene or Branch. Going forward I ecpect this to be the Norm and no longer an issue that needs to be brought up. The real test will be to see if he gives Jordan the rope he gives Greene when Greene struggles.

We were 19-22 before we went 1-4 down the stretch and ended up shooting 77%. My point is whether you think 71% is good or not is that we shot way over our head. We were bound to miss some. Harrison and Greene are good(Greene never goes though) and Jordan looks good. Don't trust any of our bigs or Branch from the line.

I love your points could not agree more , I was yelling the whole time at the Garden go to CJ side of the Zone.
And if we are going to press more , which will use more energy and most likely foul trouble we should use a deeper bench.
St.johns fans showed up garden was 60% orange still but an improvement.

Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"

Hooper didn't play much because there was no one he could guard on defense in this game.  The few minutes he was in, he was guarding Grant.  That could have gotten ugly, quickly.  There will be lesser or different opponents where we will be able to utilize Hooper more.

The reason we were that high was because pretty much all of them were taken by Harrison and Jordan.  Branch was 2-2 as well.  Those are our 3 best foul shooters (can't say anything about Marco or Max, because they have not gotten to the line enough).  I know Harrison missed one late, but it was mostly the other guys faultering down the stretch.

Don't think we shot over our heads, we just had the right guys at the line most of the day, and then we didn't.

Jordan(I know he went 9-9) could get there but I only trust Harrison at the line. None of the frontcourt guys make  me comfortable there.
Hooper and Bourgault might not combine for 10 free throw attempts all year

Jordan gets to stay on court if not shooting well if the rest of his game doesn't fall apart. Green still gonna play. Coach trusts him. The way our bigs are playing we might see the guards playing more. Would you be real upset if Sampson sat some down the stretch? Just askin.

He played very poorly at the end but until Jordan shows more Sampson is stll our 2nd best player.
Me personally would have Jordan, Harrison, Pointer ,Sampson and Obepka / Sanchez on the floor as much as possible. I know everyonre loves to have depth, but I like a 8 man rotation and that is all most succesful teams play.
