Obekpa's improvement
« on: February 14, 2014, 12:13:53 AM »
He's really coming along. PMG is a great source of information but i really hope he's wrong in this case about him leaving, or this stretch flat out changed his mind because he is showing some real signs of improvement and quite frankly our frontcourt would be dead without him next year. He's been catching almost everything down low lately and has really started to develop a little hook. Whoever is working with him deserves some credit as well. I would say he needs to cut back on the goal tends but I feel like a lot of them are questionable and hey that's his game.

How about this stat for him on offense..

Career games in double-figure points:

First 53 Games - 0 times
Last 5 Games - 4 times

His free throw shooting also seems to have improved lately as well. Somebody finally taught him to stand upright instead of leaning back when he shoots

While it is always hard to read body language with these kids, he seems very happy right now.

He had a stretch of three games where he was the worst player on the floor on both teams. And one of those teams was Dartmouth.

He has really turned it around though.

He's not leaving.  He was clearly not happy because he was getting coached up in man-to-man for the first time instead of being allowed to freestyle out of a zone, but he seems to have really bought in.  He's got a guaranteed 30 mpg the next two seasons and will be playing on tournament teams.

The kid looks really improved...whoever has working with him the last month or so has done a great job.  It's not just the obvious things either...he's setting some terrific down screens and back screens away from the ball.

I love the fact that they are pounding the ball inside.  CO had some great position early in the season but was largely ignored.  Establishing the post should be a goal in every single game this season.  It opens up so much of the offense.

Obekpa, although  he has a ways to go on offense, is blessed with good hands. Jordan's crafty inside passes line up well with that.

I think PMGs report was likely completely accurate but playing time, marked improvement (both individual and team) certainly change that.

If I'm Jordan and Obekpa (not including Jakarr here because there was never any word he was unhappy), even if I'm still not the biggest Lavin fan (if they aren't) I see the talent comin back next year and make it a goal to dominate next year together and then jump to NBA.  Not sure if either will be ready then, but it's not an unrealistic goal. Future is bright again. For now.

I always thought Obekpa had the potential to be a 10 point, 8 rebounds per game player, but I really like the chemistry Jordan and Obekpa seem to have.  If they both come back next year, along with Sampson and Harrison, sky's the limit for this team next year.

What was PMGs report?  It is amazing the transformation he has made in a few weeks. He is so much more aggressive on the offensive end  and is becoming a force there. He is one of the reasons we have been winning lately. The SH scrubs made Sanchez look like a HS player on D. I couldn't waiting  till CO came back in. If he keeps improving like this he will be dangerous next year. Has to work on his goal tending, but I believe some of them where legitimate blocks.

I was at a Gtown game in the 80s where Ewing had around 5 blocks in the first 10 minutes.  Sounds bad but he established he owned the inside early and it was another easy win against a good opponent.  Goaltending is OK unless it is mindless, Obekpa should go for it without a lot of thought, if he just does it a large percentage will and have been OK
