Lavin's Contract

Comparing Lavin to Williams and even to coach K has to be put in perspective. Below are the record breakdowns of the previous seasons before Williams, K, and Lavin, before they took over their respective programs and their records after their respective programs. Funny enough both Williams and K took over NCAA teams. It looks like K took a few years to build  Duke into a power house. I am NOT saying Lavin is better then Williams or K, but to put things into perspective on how far behind he was in rebuilding an SJU program (I left out the Jarvis years). If you look at his record with his guys he has been making steady improvements, compared to Norm who became flat over his time as coach.

I have stated in earlier post on how I feel about Lavin's extension, but their has been steady improvement in wins, respectability and NYC buzz about the program...It is a good thing that people have expectations for the program again but I think people are taking things out of context on how hard it is to turn a program around.

Thomas Aaron Crean  Prior to that he served as head coach at Marquette University (1999–2008), where the program had averaged 20 wins a year and made six postseason appearances, including the 2003 NCAA Final Four. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Crean_(basketball) 2007 Marquette made the tournament. Buzz's first year he made it to the 2nd round.

Is that not accurate? I think we could agree that Harrison, Jordan, Sampson, and Obekpa are the core players on the team. If 3/4 of the core group are underclassmen, I think that would qualify as not having much experience.

It's not particularly accurate, no. Greene and Pointer play more than Obekpa, and they're curiously absent from the core. These are the minutes in descending order by years. One freshman, two sophs and a bunch of upperclassmen, juniors who've played nearly three full years.

Minutes played are skewed. Jordan and Obekpa play much more now than in the beginning of the year, players like Pointer, Gift, Sanchez, and at times even Greene play less. I'll put it another way, who is more valuable to the team and there success?

Obekpa> Sanchez/Gift
Sampson>Pointer
Jordan>Greene/Branch

Our Soph's and freshman, specifically Jordan and Obekpa, have been pivotal to our seasons turn around. Not our upper classmen. Not Pointer, Greene and to a lesser extent, even Harrison. It's not a coincidence that we started playing better when Jordan and Obekpa began playing more minutes. Sure Pointer and Greene have games were they contibute to the win, but is there contibutions critical for the success of the team over the course of a season and going forwad as pivitol as Jordans, Obekpa, and Sampson? I don't believe so. Pointer played 5 minutes against Marquette in a pivitol double overtime game. This is why they are not in my core. 

Please re read what I originally said, I said going three rounds, as in playing as a sweet 16 team not getting to the elite 8 which again with the assembled talent and COMPETENT COACHING is not a reach.

Not a reach? Making the sweet 16 is not a easy task. You really make it seem like no other school has the same assembled talent and in a similar situation. Look at Baylor, Ok St., Marq, Indiana. These teams may not even make the tournament let alone sweet 16. Is it the coaching? It sure isn't a lack of talent.
