The connection is with Chiles, not with Jordan. Chiles recruited Newbill at Drexel and the two clicked. Trip down memory lane - this is the kid that buzz Williams cut after he signed a LOI with Marquette
 So technically, SJU would be his 4th school

Rubin clearly was not talking to anyone at SJU or in Newbill’s camp when he wrote that.

Where on earth did he get that rumor from?  Nobody even had Newbill transferring let alone transferring to SJU.
