Officiating
« on: November 14, 2015, 06:13:09 PM »
Does anyone think the game is getting worse in terms of lack of flow.  Just seems like way too many whistles and there is no chance for the game to get into a flow.  Combine the crazy number of whistles (many questionable) and then the timeouts (I know there are less this year) it just seems like games are less and less enjoyable to sit through and watch.

It's the beginning of the year. They always call it tight. Players need to adjust.

I'd prefer they call it tight and have players learn they can't foul on every play. Will create more exciting games in the long run.

If you're basing this on SJU/Wagner game than yes. It was a brutal offensive game + ticky tack fouls off free throws + media timeouts.

It was but also seems last couple years it's been escalated even more

I agree and It's definitely been happening more and more over the years. If I was not an SJU fan the Wagner game would have been torture to sit through. The refs feel like they have to call a foul whenever there is contact between two players.

Same thing is true in every other sport. Officials call a lot of fouls/penalties to enforce rules to start the season. That gets everyone's attention. The teams practice avoiding such fouls/penalties. Then the games flow much smoothly.

Agree. Hockey has changed many rules to increase flow of game and it has really helped. Also less time between face offs. Much tougher to do in hoops but maybe they can hustle up the free throws.

I know the reason they are doing this is to try to add scoring which in theory makes for more exciting games, but i get absolutely infuriated when guys play good defense but get called for a foul which has become far too common in today's game. Let them play a little defense

They let the physical play go on for too many years. Now it's going to be really hard to get rid of. K really pushed the envelope on it in the 80's and early 90's.  That's how he made his bones. I can still remember Amaker with his hand on Mark's wrist on the final shot of the first ever NIT Preaseason tourney in November of 85'.  And how Hurley fouled the heck out of Boo Harvey all game long in the 90' NCAA tourney.. They even said he was complaining to the refs about it. No calls. (Only Singleton with the tech;  AT THE END OF THE GAME, TO GIVE THE  GAME TO DUKE).

Now if you want to get rid of the physical defense, you have to sit through whistle after whistle, and this could go on for a few more years at least.  Eventually it will stop.  But I'd rather see players display more of their offensive talents then watch "physical defense". But move the three point line back towards the NBA distance. You'd see more offensive creativity then just watching all players toeing up at the exact same distance.  I think that is what is monotonous about the game right now.  But at the end of the year they stop calling so many fouls anyway. They let more stuff go.  Bo Ryan was furious about it after the national championship game last April.

Plenty of whistles Friday . Plenty of stupid foules by our guys. I like physical basketball. I think our guys reached and pushed off and made poor decisions.

This style has been trending in this direction for several years now. It's never going back to the 80's-90's style of roughhouse basketball. It does kill the flow of the game but it's happening in every other sport too.
